Can anyone tell me if there was a vin number stamped on the 4 spd trannys in the 1978 trans ams and if so where could I find it? Thanks,

on my 79 4spd it was at the very top, stamped on a pad, passenger side i think

Could you see it from under the car or did the tranny have to be out?

yes, you can see it while its in, just look up under there towards the floorpan
