Any 1978 Y 84s out there
« on: February 15, 2010, 04:52:55 PM »
Hi guys - just wondering if there are some Y84 from 1978 owners on the forum.. Dont seem to hear that much from any of the owners, or perhaps I am just missing the posts..
We own one down here in Oz, and I am aware of another one here thats been converted to Right Hand Drive.. but would love to see a pic or two of some sister cars of 78.

Cheers

HI.  No there were almost 300 Y 84 built in 1978.
210 had the 403 oldsmobile in them - (L80)
88 had the 400 pontiac in them (L78)

from hitmans website
1978:
Y82 - in early 1978 the Y82 was the Special Edition with the Hurst t-top roof.
Y88 - 1978 they came out with the Gold Special Edition Trans Am which had the Y88 designation, but just like in 1976, it did not matter if the car had t-tops or not, they were all the same Y88 code.
Y84 - After the Y88 was canceled, they came back out with the black and gold Special Edition, but this time it had the Fisher t-top roof and was labeled Y84.

I guess I am looking for other family members of the 298 that were built in that year - currently I only know of 2 of them and they are both in Australia.. surely there are others.

Of the 88 400 cars built, 20 of them were 4spds which would have been W72 cars. How about the remaining 68? Were they L78/autos?

IIRC, there was one of the 20 on Ebay several years ago, not sure where it went.

yep Paul you are right.. 20 were manual.. it would be great to see one still alive. You would think that with  210 built with  the Olds 403 that the chances of a few more still kicking around would be better 8)

Anyway I have a 1978 Y84 with W72 and auto (January car)

no way to tell for sure

Unlike in 1979 where Pontiac said all SE's were ttops, but some have surfaced...in 1978 all SE's no matter the code were ttops.  Y82 hurst tops, Y84 fisher tops and Y88 gold fisher tops.

Anybody who finds a 1978 S/E without t-tops will be first.  It's never been done.

As to the original question, I only ever saw one 78 Y84, and that was Charles Nagy's.

Y81's were only 1977, but in 79 there was only Y84.  There have been at least 7 known 79' ttop delete SE's that have came thru TAC or have been owned by TAC members at some point in time.

As for 78 Y84's.  While I was in high school there were two brothers (Kevin and Marc Kearney) and their parents bought them both 78 SE's.  One was a Y88 and the other was a Y84.  The younger brother Marc had the Y88 and traded it for an 80 TA with a sbc with 2x4's and lighting bold stripes down the side.  Then the mod'd TA and the Y84 sat in a barn for God knows how long.  I saw them many times, but they disappeared and I haven't seen them since.  Haven't seen the brothers in years either.

IM looking at a few right now that a are labeled 1978 y84s,  but in the pics they have no nose on them but they have 79 style taillights.  do you think this was a taillight swap or mislabeled as 78s when they are really 79s?   ill try to get the vins from the guy

hard to swap 78 tail lites into a 79, or vice versa. the rear panels are totally different.

i figured as much, but hes adamant that they are 78s.  then again, not every one is as knowledgeable as the rest of us with these things. i just wasnt sure is there was any such thing as very late made 78s with 79 taillights installed at the factory.  given them starting to swap over tooling and what not for the new model year.

I just picked one up. Y84 Olds 403 car, sold new in Fresno, one owner car. Spent its whole life out there. No motor or trans though. One of the first ones built. The first one documented was supposedly built on Dec 9th. Mine was built on the 19th

I just picked up  '78 Y84 from Washington state.  It is a March car.  It's even a WS6 car too.  But it doesn't have power windows.  The original transmission is gone but the original W72 is still in.  When I get back home, I'll try and see if it will start.  The paint is faded to gray, there are dents, but not much sheet metal will need to be replaced.  The hood scoop hasn't even been cut open.
