SUBFRAME MEASUREMENTS

1975-1981 SUBFRAMES


All measurements taken from mouting holes are taken from the EDGE of the holes with a regular old tape measure.....so you don't need any special tools out in the field. Remember these measurements are from the EDGE of the holes. All measurements should be equal from side to side



Measurement A: this is between the two front radiator support mounting holes from edge to edge......36 3/4 inches

Measurement B: this is from the upper shock mounting hole to the edge of the radiator support mount hole.......21 5/8 inches

Measurement C: this is taken from the rear most subframe mounting hole to the very front inside corner of the frame rail.......78 inches

Measurment D: this is the measurement from the edges of the upper control arm mounting brackets toward the front of the subframe......31 3/4 inches

Measurement E: measurement from the edges of the upper control arm mounting brackets toward the rear of the subframe......34 1/2 inches

Measurement F: this is taken from the edge of the rear subframe mounting hole to the edge of the middle subframe mounting hole........27 3/8 inches

Measurement G: this is the measurement from the edges of the rear most subframe mounting holes.......31 5/8 inches

where'd your friend get that from? That doesn't show anywhere on my '78 or '79 Service Manual

not quite sure . i live in mo he is from mich he faxed it to me so i could put my frame on and to make sure it is square with the body.   not just aligned with a couple of dowel holes.  you never know with our cars what has happened before we got them.

Very informative, will these measurements be the same for all 70-81 years?
Also would you have any idea what the average WALL THICKNESS and TOTAL WEIGHT of the frame should be.
I'm trying to establish if my frame is sound, and if the years of exposure to the elements and rust haven't deteriorated it's walls. Thanks

where'd your friend get that from? That doesn't show anywhere on my '78 or '79 Service Manual

It can be found in a "FISHER BODY SERVICE MANUAL" not the standard service manual.    Each Fisher manual covers many vehicles (basically ALL body styles - Pontiac, Cheby, Olds, Cadillac, etc.) but does not provide any driveline information (motor, trans, etc.).  There is great deal of information in a Fisher Manual; doors, ductwork, seals, wiring (routing only) etc.



I have the pages your looking at in .pdf format.  I sent them to another TAC guy a few months back.  If you want them send me an e-mail & I'll forward them.

The Fisher Manuals are on e-bay all the time and normally don't fetch too many $$.  I think I paid $10 for mine.   They really have a lot of great information you can't find in the service manual.

How do these measurement differ for a 70-74 subframe?

The later frames are wider in the back. The later frames also have different rear mounting locations.

Old post but does anyone have a cleaner copy of this?

I thought I had a virtual shop manual but apparently I have the parts list catalogue and not the shop manual. I bought it at least 15 years ago and never looked at it until recenlty

got this from a friend when i installed my frame.

I need to line up the subframe to the body, and I didn't bother taking measurements as it was in a minor accident of some sort and was likely out of whack

Interesting, I have been comparing the numbers and they are slightly different.

I wonder if it makes a difference?

also something to note is OP stated "edge of hole" to "edge"......well when measuring between to SAME SIZED HOLES....if you measure from the "inside" edge of 1 hole to the "outside" edge of the other hole....you now have the "center to center" measurement.

I ended up using the difference between the Firebird #'s and Camaro #'s and made sure to cross measure several times and at the moment, I'm happy with where it's sitting. I guess time will tell once I start putting fenders and hoods back on.
