Did some more work, wanted to get the planters off of the ground so I build a frame and secured to the ground using landscape spikes.

The planters go on either side of the entrance (to create some kind of a wall)

And a platform for others planters (want to create a wall of plants).

The finished product - kinda.

And before finishing the main deck I decided to build a grill/outdoor kitchen space... Lets see when I'll finish this one.

I got lazy with the small deck and used mailbox spike to secure the 4 by 4 posts at each corner. It was not easy driving a 30" spike in a very rocky ground, but managed after digging down about half way. I think it'll be fine.

I've been doing some work after my daytime job and finished the deck but decided that I need a pergola over it, so took the sides off to fit in some posts.

I laid it out using spacers to square it.

Then worked my way from the center out (after screwing everything down I removed few boards to install the posts)

The posts are plum and secured, next I'll bolt on some rafters to build the pergola.

Thanks, I really enjoy working outside and building. Did some more work and moved the grill (and used it this weekend). Moving the grill opened up a lot of space in the patio and I already start planning another project before finishing this one.

I take my time and make sure it is a good as I want it.

Had some free time and did some more work. Working alone and had to come up with creative ways of supporting the beam.

And I think this is it for the season, I also bolted a railing to prevent the grill from falling over.

Yesterday the weather cooperated so I decided to cut and bolt on the 2 by 6 laying around the back yard. I think this is it for the season as we are expecting snow on Sunday.

I am right on the border line between sandy soil and rocky stuff. I prefer sandy! My brother that lives in Canada put in a deck a couple of years ago and kept sending me pics of the holes he was digging. Nothing but rock. He worked on them for a couple of weekends with a Hilti.
