ANNOYING NOISE WHEN GOING OVER BUMPS
« on: October 13, 2024, 07:22:39 PM »
My 78 TA, has a annoying creaking noise on the passenger side, around the ac vent, glove box area, whenever i hit a bump.
I pulled out the glove box, & ac duct assembly, & the kick panel fresh air vacuum  solenoid, noise was still there.
Then removed inner fender, & blower motor, road tested it, & it was gone, a couple screws had backed out on the blower motor housing, so I figured that was the problem.
New GM blower motor installed &
Put it all back together, road tested, but the annoying noise is still there.
Anybody else had this problem?

You may be close to the problem with the noise disappearing with the inner fender removed.

Can you duplicate the noise by bouncing the front end up and down? The front suspension is pretty stiff, if you can get a couple helpers to get more bounce in the suspension. Just be careful not to push so hard on the fenders that you dent them.

Just throwing a few ideas out there, that suspect area is very close to a rubber body mount to the subframe. The bolts (I believe are 1/2") are known to rust and disintegrate, especially after 40 some years. The rubber mounts deteriorate too. Upper and lower control arm bushings can go bad. Also check the shock mounts. If you suspect any of these spraying some oil may temporarily eliminate the creak and help you isolate the problem.

As above if that's the case, keep an eye on rear clearance of inner fender, lip close to rubbing at firewall and even near chassis rail. Firewall is a hinge point for flexing between front end and body. Condition of body punts may be everything in limiting movement.

Just a thought,  sounds like the noise I had, changed a bunch of stuff, solid body mounts, suspension, bushings, etc.still there. Friend of mine said how's the hinge pins on the doors? Door are really heavy and of course they is some play when you pick up on it so that's next. Hoping that does the trick.

Did door hinge rebuild/replace take care of the noise?

Wow, didn't mean to stall the thread but it's highly unlikely I will get to this now, car is parked and with 12 to 18 inches of snow forecast for tonite into tommrow it will not be back out. I already told the guys to stay home tomorrow and I could use a mental rest day, lol so car is clean and I will shine it up more and put up off the floor, a good cover for hibernation,  battery tender hooked up and that's it till spring. It's sad that at 64 years old I didn't even run a full tank of gas thru it this year. One more house and that's it, then what am I going to do??? Hopefully live long enough  to enjoy my life long work to retire!
