Motor Mounts
« on: September 16, 2023, 09:24:17 AM »
More of a curiosity, looking at the motor mounts on my 79 Pont 400. The build sheet says something to the effect of 'motor mounts - Blue, Green. I have an original motor mount with a spot of blue paint and when I restored my 77 the mounts had blue paint on one and green on the other. Placing the one I have with blue paint it only fits on the passenger side, SO should I assume that blue was for there and green was for the driver side. Also, in the assembly manual there is a picture of a 'shield' located on the top of the motor mount with a note that says r.h. only. Does anyone know about this?

That's right, the mounts are LH and RH part numbers. I couldn't tell you which colour was which without looking up numbers.

Is that the 1980 Assembly manual? That'd be Turbo 301 heatshield for rubber mount.

Depending what engine will determine if the same mount is used for left or right or a different mount on each side. Checking online parts listings for NPD, AMES, Classic Industries or Rock Auto will show the same part number for left or right side engine mounts on 1975 -1981 Firebirds, with a Pontiac 301, 350, 400, 455, or Oldsmobile 403. My 1980 TA with 301 had the same mount on both sides. When I replaced that engine with a 400 block I installed new mounts from Rock Auto, they sent me two of the same part number mounts. The fit both sides without issue.

1970-1974 Firebirds had different mounts on each side. Later 2nd generation Firebirds with certain engine options used different mounts on each side. The metal bracket that connects the engine block to the engine mounts on 1975-1981 Firebirds with Pontiac V8's had a different metal bracket on left and right side.

I missed where you said the Blue only fits the Passenger-side, so that solves that nice and quick! Generally, US GM seem to number their 'matching' LH/RH parts starting with the Passenger/side. As is parts X will be 501 for RH and 502 for LH. Often the same for odd and even numbers but have noticed a few that don't follow this. I'm not sure why, you'd think Driver's side first, perhaps production line worked from near side.
