TAC needs you
« on: January 17, 2023, 10:23:29 PM »
Hey everyone, TAC has always been something that I wanted to be free and I have always tried to keep it that way.  With everything that has transpired over the past two-three years the sponsorships have dropped off and the support from google ads has been non existent.  I have been able to make up the difference in the past when this situation occurred, but I'm not in a situation where I can do that.  You all have been great when TAC needed your help in the past and I'm hoping I can count on your support again.  If you are able to help please click here and then click on the "Bufford T Justice" image.  Any amount will help, but nothing is expected.

Thanks,
mrbandit

I don't need people to know I donate money, did that in the past, the forum still disappeared. I contribute instead so others can come, ask q's and never return. If it doesn't survive, will just move on.
If the sponsorship drops off, delete them, then seek new.

I am still looking into the decal source, but I was out of town yesterday and couldn't spend much time on that.  I would like do something like that, but in all honesty that would take a long time to raise money selling decals.  My plan is to have decals available, make some of those who are able to help and send decals to those members to say thank you.

As for sponsors, I've been very fortunate over the past 22 years to have sponsors like PhoenixGraphix, NPD, Blocker, Etc..., but others come and go.  I'm sure they attempt to track sells from the sites they sponsor and that drives their continued sponsorships.  I have reached out to some companies in the past, but it usually isn't met with acceptance.

I think I have been in this situation maybe 2-3 times over those 22 years, so again we have been fortunate.  This year, I just cannot make up the difference myself.

Thanks to those who have given so far.

I keep hearing everyone is on Facebook, I don't do Facebook and rely on old fashioned web-based sites like TAC. It seems as though the activity on these sites is not what it used to be. Some sites have died and others have little activity. For me TAC has been a source of great technical information, entertainment and has saved me a lot of money. In the real world nothing is free, somebody has to pay.  If TAC is important to you, please contribute something.

I get the feeling there are lot's of people who read TAC but never post. Then there is the group of 20 or so members who are pretty active and maybe a half dozen who are on almost daily. Try not to be one of those who only reads or asks one question every two years. If you don't have a Firebird talk about the one you or a friend used to own. Any kind of car story, or your hobbies, or projects around the house. When people post it has a snowball effect and often generate other post and creates interesting conversations. From what I have seen this is a friendly site and people don't give you grief because they see things differently.

Mr. Bandit, thanks for keeping TAC going and my apologies for standing on a soap box and deviating from the original subject.

Thanks for the post Mike! We are a small community, but I know that the information is very important here. I feel that a lot of folks stumble on the site and do find information, but may not join or contribute. I've loved this site ever since I found it while searching for information on my first restoration project, 1976 Trans Am. When I get a chance, I'll rebuild my full thread here.

I hope all who use the site can contribute, even small amounts help.

This has be a great place for me. It has helped me so much over the years. No only in information for my LS swap but parts identification and locating hard to find parts. Best of all I have made some good friends on here and I have met s few folks as well in person. It's a great place and I'd hate to lose it.

Mike, on a side note, I think it would be interesting to post a how the site came about, who you are with background and what cars you had/ have. I have been on here for a few years but I don't know much about the sites beginning or your passion.  Just a suggestion and thank you for all you have done and continue to do.

Being a college kid in computer science I have a bit of experience with web, curious how much is going into keeping the site up, from experience domains are relatively cheap a year depending on how common the name is, hosting a php site can be done for dollars a month in todays market, you could even host it off your own desktop + internet depending on your restrictions or even use a raspberry pi solely for the website. If you are spending a lot per month I would suggest looking into alternatives that could be considerably cheaper. You said you’ve had this site for 22 years maybe you are paying legacy rates when it comes to the services you have. Just sharing things that I’ve experienced in the past I don’t know your exact situation, I appreciate the forums and all you’ve done for the community. Also I’d either schedule or do manual backups of the site just in case, prevention is a heck of a lot easier than fixing something.

Drop the sponsor section completely. No free pass for sponsors that don't contribute or even respond or update news on their products.

Zach, thank you for sharing that.  I have looked at services like godaddy that can host a site for $10 a month, but those account types don't always give you access to the root of your server or provide administrative functionality that I sometimes need.  I'm almost certain that there is a host out there that meets my needs but moving this site with multiple databases and a forum isn't fun.  My current host has really good support, so I have considered that as well.  I have considered hosting my own server, but I don't want everything that comes with that.  I do IT work for a living, so I'm not interested in bringing my work home with me.

Regarding the Sponsors section.  I'll take a look at prune out the ones that no longer support the site

Had a look at the Fbook site of TAC. What rubbish that is. No one posts questions or answers, just shared crap from someone else. It is not a replacement for a decent forum. But then, where are there any decent forums now?
