Steering Column Color Question
« on: January 23, 2023, 05:37:14 PM »
Hello guys, well once again i have another Trans Am questions.
The question this time is around steering columns for 77's to 81.
Was it possible to order an interior a certain color but have the steering column black?
For example red interior with a black steering column?

I ask because my friend bought a 78 Trans Am recently. The car has a tan interior but there is a black steering column in there.
At first I assumed it was swapped.  Then I started to look at some low miles (original) TA's online and noticed the same thing on some cars.
Again i am not sure if the pics i saw were all original trans am's but I saw many with different steering column colors.

Thanks again I am sure someone will have the answer here :)

Firebird and Esprit came with colour-matched columns. Formula seemed to be available with colour or black, it depended if a 'Formula' sports wheel or not if it got the black instead of coloured with woodgrain/insert. TA always got black with black 'Formula' wheel until the Y88 arrived and got tan and matching wheel.

So not just the column colour of black or coloured, it also came down to steering wheel available that matched it, and TA only came with the black, until Y88 and then 79+ models.

And of course, the fancy Esprit models of the 77/78 Skybird and Redbird were optional with sports wheel in which case it was actually coloured blue or red to match column.

Just for the sake of pretty pics, a regular 78 TA with Camel Tan interior vs a 78 Y88 TA.

Great info. I have to say, I think I like the black column and  wheel better, looks a bit sportier.

As mentioned, it had the Formula wheel which came in black unless one of the fancy options, so also got the black column. If it hadn't been optioned with that wheel, it would have the regular wheel and column in blue. Naturally, the horn cap matches the wheel and column also.
