Power Window Questions
« on: October 28, 2022, 03:21:04 PM »
Each power window motor on my 74 Esprit has a blue and (what appears to be) a brown wire going to it. Is one wire for up and the other for down? Trying to figure it out.

The car was somewhat derelict for a while so only the driver door motor barely works. It's slower than rush hour traffic here in So Cal.  :P

Any tips to clean and what to lubricate the tracks with or anything else to help them out? This is my first second gen with power windows.

Thanks in advance!

that is correct and the motor is earthed through the motor case to the door and through the door hinges to the body

Clean and lube the door hinges several times as they need to ground, bad design. Or just run an extra ground cable from the door inner shell/power window motor mount through the rubber boot to the inside of the body behind kick panel. Then live wire to either side for up or down. Any issues after that are generally burnt out wiring and window switch due to the load and overheating. Rewiring with relays is eventually best, even on a good working system, the window motors are generally fairly bullet proof.

Yes, going with the four relays system is the best solution for slow power windows. There used to be a great write up (may have been a sticky?) but the TAC crash wiped that out. It can be conveniently tucked underneath the center console, if your Esprit has one. I'm about to install power window relays in my '87 Monte SS...the guy whom I purchased the ones for my T/A also made the set for the Monte.

i placed the relays inside the doors
just ran an additional heavy positive and ground wire 8 gauge
then used original wiring to activate coils
as i dont feel the factory wiring was heavy enough
