Key Fob Modern Cars
« on: August 17, 2022, 01:57:36 PM »
You guys may know this already, but my son pointed this out to me. The key fob of a keyless start pushbutton actually comes apart and has a built in/hidden key in case of emergency. The door handle pops off and exposes a key slot as well.
Doesnt make a lot of diff to me as I dont own any of these new modern era cars  :???:

Never had one, driven one, had interest in one, so didn't know that either.

I found the key when I was replacing the battery on my father's key fob. He was panicking when the dash light came on saying key fob battery low. He thought that he might get stuck somewhere.

Isn't technology great, when it works! Sometimes it's one step forward and two steps back.

I like just carrying a Fob in my pocket, push the button on the handle and the car unlocks, push the start button and it goes. But, on our cars the hidden key will only unlock the driver's door. We still have the start button to contend with. I seem to recall when the battery is partially dead you can hold the Fob next to the start button and the car will start.

Correct, for Chrysler products anyway. Had to try that at work before back when we had some chargers. I also recall not being able to shut one off once. Pushed the button, everything shut off (radio, gauges, hvac) except the engine! Lol. Don’t remember how we figured that one out lol.

Related to modern tech, my brother had bought a new harley touring bike. This was at least 10 yrs ago. We did a lot of multi state touring at the time. His bike still had a key but it also came with factory alarm which disabled the motor. I think there was a separate button on the fob that did that. He was paranoid that he would set the alarm and the battery would die and he wouldnt be able to unset, SO, he never used the feature. We were on a trip in lower W VA, stopped at a small town to look at the map and get some bearings. He went to start his bike and it was dead! The alarm module was bad!! Irony at its best. Fortunately there was a dealer a few blocks away and they had ONE part in stock. Nice 3  hour delay but the shop had a decent little museum of old bikes to kill a few minutes in.
