Hershey AACA HQ
« on: July 21, 2022, 06:39:53 AM »
Figure I would post here instead of shows. Not sure if anyone is within an hour or 2 or Hershey PA, but they new AACA hq is having an open house, quasi car show this coming Sunday. Demos, food trucks, non judged car show (basically a cruise in) with all types of cars invited, be it a hot rod, classic, resto mod, motorcycle etc. Wayne Carrini will be there too. I have been looking forward to this for the last 2 months, even been preparing the Trans Am for the ride. Now the weather is going to be sunny but pushing 100!  Not sure I am going to make it , if I do def. wont be taking the Pontiac, may ride my bike up.

Kerry,

Hersey PA is over 700 miles away from me. I can’t do it this year but maybe someday I can combine it with a trip to visit my daughter in Alexandria VA. I’ll be counting on you for a report and maybe some pictures.

I enjoy Wayne Carini on Chasing Classic Cars and his column in Hagerty Drivers club. He has also done some interesting podcast for my Crusin Tiger’s Pontiac club. Talking about a pathed together 1st generation Firebird he used to drag race.

I hope you have a fantastic time!

Hit the road at 630 this morning for the hour + trip to Hershey. Had a great day. They had a tremendous turnout, many more cars than I expected to see. Saw Wayne Carrini a couple of times but he was busy running around so I didnt bother to say hi. Like most places, the heat wave was there and it topped out close to 100. I wasnt too crazy about the idea of driving my 77 that gets 10mpg and no air, so I took the wifes mustang instead. Lots of modern cars and a couple of rows of mustangs so they parked me on the show field. Took the long way home which was about a 2 hr+ ride. Got too hot and had to stop on the way back and put the top up and crank the a/c on high. I will get some pics posted tomorrow when I get to my desktop.

It's hot here too.   Pa. is on my wife's list of places to visit if we ever get things caught up here.  Actually, she wants to do a nor'easter tour  all the way to Maine.

Wayne Carrini with a highly modified Talledegha Torino. I was standing beside the side exit exhaust when he started, to say it was loud is an understatement. Really an incredible car, the attention to detail was amazing!

1928 Pontiac (1 of 3 Pontiacs I saw). This car was perfectly restored, has been in the same family since new. Owners uncle bought it in 1928!

Mike, PA is a beautiful state. Especially the central part with the rolling hills. Hershey is a very nice town as well. I try to get up there 3 or 4 times a year just because I like the area and its a nice drive. Although I live in MD, I am less than 5 miles from the southern border, it seems like I spend more time in PA than MD.

This show had nothing to do with what is commonly thought as 'the old car gathering' that happens annually at Hershey. This was a one day special event, car show that was set up by the AACA as a sort of a public opening of their new HQ building. The AACA's statement is to preserve, show cars as they were originally built. At this event all vehicles of any description were invited. The 'big' Hershey show is around the first week of Oct. Lasts a few days, has a huge swap meet, cars for sale corral, mainstream auction etc. Def. the mecca for the old car enthusiast. Def. worth a trip.

Kind of a loaded question?  The Antique Automobile Club of America is the organization that sends out the monthly publication, has a membership, etc. The building in the pic is their new Headquarters, and quite a beautiful building I will add. They have an extensive library that is free for members and one can find just about anything auto related. In their lobby they have a small collection of very significant autos. Not really a museum per se.

Across the street, about 2 miles away is the 'AACA Museum'. This building is NOT affiliated at all with the 'club'. Although if you are a member of the AACA 'club' you get free membership. There was a big kafluffle several years ago between the museum board members and the 'club' resulting in a long drawn out lawsuit. That resulted in the split. From some of the die hard 'club' guys just the mention will bring their blood to a boil! I am a member of the 'club' and have no feelings between the two. In fact I try to get the museum a couple of times a year.

To answer your question, they have a tremendous collection of autos and memorabilia. Def worth a trip. They have horseless carriages up to almost modern stuff. A great collection of buses, some motorcycles and other bits. They usually have some special exhibit that last about 6 months or so to keep things fresh. They have probably the largest collection of Tuckers on the planet with I think 4 cars, a rolling chassis, about 6 motors, Preston Tuckers office and blue prints, and many other Tucker bits.

Thanks for posting Kerry, we used to go down to PA regularly when my kids were young. I think it was 8 years ago when I posted our Hershey - PA visit including the Museum pics.
