Smokey and The Bandit
« on: May 31, 2022, 12:42:18 PM »
I thought I posted this here but after a quick glance didnt see anything. Sunday afternoon my son and myself went to the theatre to watch Smokey and The Bandit. It was put on by Fathom events through TCM as part of the 45th anniversary. It will be showing in select theatres again on June 1 and June 2. I have seen the movie a zillion times, but have never seen it on the big screen. It was a lot of fun. I was going to take my car but decided against it at the last minute. Wish I had once I got there. I was a bit surprised that the theatre was about half full. To me that was a good crowd.

We drove our '77 to it Sunday afternoon.  I watched the 40th anniversary on the big screen, and also saw it twice now at 2 different drive-ins (one at Firebirdfest last year in St. Louis and once at our local drive-in for RatoberFest).  What I notice each time is that there are so many small details that I never catch on tv, but glare at me on the big screen.

That must have been fun and wish I can find a theater that will show it around my area.

We have one of two theaters locally showing it but for some reason, even though both locations are owned and operated by the same company, they chose the location at the local mall in Toledo rather than an arguably better location that’s somewhat more rural. I’d have considered going there but not worth my effort to go to the one in Toledo. DEFINITELY wouldn’t drive and park my car there. Then again, having no engine currently creates its own issues lol.

I always thought a drive-in to see the movie would be a lot of fun. I’d probably be tempted to be “that guy” and drive the car there. Maybe someday.

I wanted to take my car but my wife dropped us off and went birthday shopping. She has never driven the 77 other than down the street and back. The area around the theatre is very congested with 4 busy lanes of traffic in every direction. I didnt want to put her in that situation.
I joked to my son that we should go back tonight, park the car out front and charge $1 for pics

Im with you Joe, I have seen it at least 100 times, and first time on the big screen was extra fun. Its corny and campy but still a lot of fun to watch.

Mike, I watched a Smokey DVD on my computer one time and being closer to the screen, I saw some details also. The scene when Burt drives the T/A out of the truck, he's talking to Jerry about changing channels on the CB. I looked at Burt's watch, you can see the minute hand moving a lot faster than real time. I guess they edited a few takes together, because according to Burt's watch that scene took about a 1/2 hour.
