What's going on in the Richmond, VA area?
« on: February 15, 2022, 10:15:38 AM »
My wife and I are taking steps to move to the Richmond, VA area and am curious what the car scene looks like there? Anyone in that area?

We are visiting mid April this year to scope things out and will be making the move hopefully this fall or early winter. Tired of the weather, taxes and other stuff going on in NY. Any insight would be helpful.

Cheers,
Ryan

Glad to see you got your priorities straight lol. All kidding aside I don't blame you and which I could do the same. If I was moving I think I would pick VA NC area.

Our kids are still young, 6 & 2, and right now seems like a great time. My sister in law is also planning to move there in the next year too. No time like the present!

Nice Ryan, keep me updated, I'm about an hour from you. Lots of stuff in this area. I know they have a cars and coffee on Saturday morning, just don't know which day. Last time I went, about 400 cars, just for cars and coffee. About 30 minutes away there's another cruise in at the horse racing place (forget the name). PM me when you get settled and I'll give you my number.

I've never been to NY but I'm happy to hear that y'all are getting out.  I hear the taxes there are awful.

Actually NY is not bad but I can't stand NYC and the surrounding area. Still taxes are not as bad as MA.

My daughter is in the Lynchburg area. Very nice country around there, plenty of old iron there also. I only know Richmond by passing thru on the way to south Florida or on the way back. They are sneaky devil's, 84 in a 70 didn't go over well there.

Yes, do not speed when travelling I95 through southern VA. I have contributed a few times, LOL. I am 3 hrs north, have been in the area a quite a few times travelling to Williamsburg. I have also been to the area where Ryan lives and its beautiful, but I agree on the weather and any time you can cut your tax bill is a bonus.
Speaking of taxes, IF you have no ties to go there, other than a relocation have you looked elsewhere in the mid south. I was under the impression that North Carolina was free of state taxes, not sure about VA. There are areas in NC, charlotte area that are very similar to Richmond.

We live just outside of Charlotte in Harrisburg and, yes, NC does have state taxes.  As a matter of fact, my wife and I are thinking of buying a second residence in FL to avoid having to pay state taxes.

Yeah the state taxes are 6% in VA vs 8% in NY, but more importantly the real estate taxes are dramatically less. We love our house, but the amount of taxes that we pay is ridiculous. I've lived in my small town in NY my whole life and I'm really looking forward to being in a new place. Way more sunshine, warmer weather, way lower taxes and better opportunities for my kids. My wife has sent out a bunch of resume's over the last week so hopefully we hear back from one of them very soon. Now that we have this plan, we are both really anxious to get the ball rolling.

So much to think about.... Selling our house, packing, buying a new house, and etc.

Thats the key, having a good plan. I know your kids are very young but still you should look for a town with good schools.

That's where we are narrowing down where we plan to live. We are visiting in April to get boots on the ground and see for ourselves.
