I just got a1974 455 block that I am building. I'm using the 6x 8 heads from the donor 400 that came out of my 76transam and all the outside parts. New crank, eagle rods, try forged pistons. Anything else I should know on this build? Someone told me I should get a bigger oil pan and if so where do I get the dipstick tube

The dipstick still only measures the top level of oil.

when you start changing stuff.....it leads to a snowball.....bigger oil pan? does that affect the size of the starter? header clearance, GROUND clearance, oil filter removal clearance with headers....etc. So buyer beware, plenty of 500 hp street motors using a 5 qt pan.

So true on the oil pan change.
If any body needs a Canton Road Race pan, 8 qt. capacity,
I have one for sale with the pickup.
Also a stock size Holley EFI gas tank with the internals.

Hopefully the Jedi Masters of this site will be able to resurrect the backups and you'll find a ton of info for your 455.  I know I spent many hours reading the advice from fellow TACsters.

to the op,
I am running a stock crank (it measured good with a polish and is standard on mains and rods), eagle h beam rods and some forged pitsons on my 74 455, 6x-4 heads unless i go edelbrock ~9.5:1 compression, long tube headers and a factory ported intake. oh, and a hydraulic roller cam

Pretty sure 6x-8 heads have bigger chambers than the 6x-4 so you might want to mill the heads under to bring the compression up. My 6x-4s are milled .070 under and I still have plenty of room to run pump 93 gas.
Also what crank did you use? What are your power and driving goals? Street/strip? Tire burner? Etc. just finished building my 468 and have done tons of research on building, and have built a solid 550/600ftlb motor
