POR15 Red Oxide paint
« on: March 17, 2021, 11:48:19 AM »
Hello all,
I am looking for the best red / brown oxide paint for my restoration. I have a 1977 TA. I found that Inline tube sells a rattle can that looks to be an exact match but also found that POR makes a red oxide paint as well.
Has anyone used either of these for their restoration and if not, what did you use with good results?

Havent use either, I think that inline advertises correct engine colours so they should be close I would imagine. No experience with POR stuff other than on some construction equipment. I think it works best applied directly to rust, I would prefer to remove it rather than cover. When I did my 77 I found that red oxide primer was no longer available. I used a regular epoxy primer on the underside then had some paint mixed from an original piece of floor to match the red oxide primer. I painted that on top of the epoxy then used a satin clear coat. A bit extreme but it worked. On my 79 I am not going through that much trouble. Eastwood sells a paint called rust encapsulator that is red, its close but a bit more on the orange side than original. I think it all depended on how the original batches were made but I have seen original examples that are anything between red and brown.

Not an expert and have not dug into POR products in a while.

If you are talking about POR15 rust converter paint in red oxide, then my only comment is the color isn't that important because POR15 should really be top-coated with something else for UV protection, per their product info.

Following along because I need to paint the primer on the bottom of my 78 TA.  The factory shipped them with red primer on the bottom, but I want paint that "looks like" primer.

This is the Eastwood rust encapsulator in red, I think they have black as well. I sprayed everything on the inside with that.

This is paint I had mixed to match an original piece that I took off the bottom. I put this on top of epoxy primer and satin clear coat.

Hi - I tried the POR15 red oxide, I didn't care for it. I blasted the undercarriage and then brushed it on.  The color looked off to me. I scuffed it up and then shot over it with black epoxy bc/cc. I prefer the look although I know it's not original.  Here are pics:
