Can anyone tell me if a 96 Trans Am is pre wired in rear for a factory 12 disc changer or if it can be wired

If the factory had that as an option it very well may be. Is there a panel in the back where the remote changer is located ? If so, look in there for anything that may be a hook up. Apples to Oranges but my Mercedes had it as an option, I added the changer after I bought the car and it plugged right in. I would almost think IF it was an option the wiring would be in place. A lot easier to plug something in than to rewire a car if the option is chosen.

The 12 disc CD player was an option in 96.  Pull the cover away in the shelf area in the trunk just behind the rear wheel on the driver side and search around for a connector.  I know that the uplevel radio with graphic equalizer had it prewired.  I don't know if the base radio had it.

Fwiw I have a 12 disc changer in my 02 TA convertible.  It tends to skip on road bumps etc. so I really dont use it much.  Other than the novelty, I’m not sure why you’d want one.

I mentioned the disc changer in my Mercedes. After once or twice I dont think I used it. I may be surprised to see what cds are still in the changer!

The nice thing about a remote changer is that the radio will be equipped with a plug that can be easily adapted for usb and a Bluetooth adapter.

Lol.  I actually retrieved all the cds and it just sits empty.  I had loaded it with a bunch of my favorites.

So what do you use now, an ipod or similar? My daily driver still features a tape deck so those gizmos are beyond me.

For me, music doesnt make that much difference to me anymore. I was a total audiophile in my youth. I started playing trumpet in the 3rd grade, moved on to baritone and was first chair in the county for the last 3 years of high school. I started playing guitar when I was about 15 and played in a few bands. Always loved making music and had a lot of fun doing so. My cars always had a state of the art, high dollar stereo system. NOW, I could honestly care less. Theres a local radio station that plays 70's/80's music that I have tuned in my shop, I listen to that or 70's on the sirius in my cars. Nothing fancy. I suppose that my hearing being diminished by about 30% from 40 yrs of construction has something to do with it.

I keep the CD changer operating in my 96 just because I like everything to work normally in an old car.  I bought the car new and it still functions that way.  Those Delco/Pioneer 12 disc CD changers that were used tend to become unreliable after several years of use.  I've had to have mine serviced twice in the past 25 years.  The last time was about a year ago and it needed a new laser/optical detector assembly and power supply.  But at least they are still being serviced by specialists and parts appear to still be available.

My car has the SLP loudmouth II exhaust and I typically only drive it on nice days with the top down.  End result is the exhaust is pretty loud so I hardly ever turn the radio on.  Still have the complete stock monsoon system.
