Exhaust Hangers
« on: July 15, 2024, 01:47:31 PM »
I am currently putting a Pypes x pipe system on my 79 TA. I know the hangers at the very rear near the splitters. Also, I know there are hangers around the back seat area. Are there any more locations that should have an exhaust hanger? I looked through the manual with the stock exhaust but these two locations are the only ones I can find.

I will try and dig up pictures or maybe the assembly manual has some illustrations. I agree with the tail pipe hangers and hangers in the rear seat area, although those may be slightly different depending on if you have the dual mufflers or the single muffler transversely mounted. I know later cars with the pancake catalytic converters had a bracket going from the front of the converter to the rear transmission mount. The converters were pretty heavy. To the best of my memory the true dual exhaust cars (1970-1974) had no such mount attaching to the trans mount. Only connections to the exhaust manifold, the tail pipes and the back seat area. I will try to find pictures or documentation.

The 2.5" Pypes install on mine was a nightmare of a job, even for a major exhaust shop. Not sure why, but they had it for 15 days and pushed it into the corner of the workshop in the too hard basket while working on other cars instead. They had to modify or replace half of it, I could have possibly had a complete custom system for similar cost, minus the international shipping and purchase. Things were different back then.

Anyway, they reused the factory splitter location for the supplied mounts, had to cut and reinstall the hanger location on the splitter ends as they were nowhere close. I also supplied 2 new Pypes muffler mounts for use above the rear axle, that could be use for crossflow muffler systems and they didn't use those mounts at all. The only reason I can think of is that the pipe over the axle was nowhere near them, they had all sorts of trouble, cutting, removing, adding, to make it all fit. Also, if based somewhat on factory style those mounts were for crossflow, duals didn't use any further mounts except where where the tailpipes are, 2 different locations depending on splitter or straight.

Instead, fashioned a solid rod hanger off side behind the mufflers and before the bend, and attached to new D-mounts bolted to where my existing subframe connectors installed. It was neat, but not really what I wanted. But after getting screwed around with engine shop, paint shop and exhaust, I just wanted to get it home. It had been away for 2.5 years for a few months work.

There's new reproduction mounts out there now, closer to stock style. I had new splitter hangers that were better than my originals but not very original looking, nor did I care too much at the time. And I still have the photos of the Pypes muffler mounts that went unused and later sold locally for giveaway prices.

I'm not sure if this was where the issue started or not, but i wanted the splitters to mount at the exact location as stock did. There were small round dents on the underside lip of the rear guard where the originals had hit at some point, so handy to line-up. That meant moving the hanger strap along and possibly upset all the over the axle area prior. Have noticed other systems exist differently to mine, I had them splayed out as much as could be for the larger size and clearance. Even with lower suspension, and 285 rear tyres, there's good clearance, even around the fuel tank rear corners.

Be aware of the rear brake hose clearance too. On factory models with dual muffler they used the small bracket to offset the brake hose mount on the axle for extra clearance. You may or may not find that on an aftermarket system. Mine has it, I can't recall if it actually needed it, but it's further away than it would have been so a bonus.

After all that rambling, no there's no mounting points other than the tailpipe/splitters for dual muffler cars and above the rear axle for crossflow muffler cars that didn't normally use one for tailpipe. I supplied them anyway just in case, and since without the cat and brackets off the trans mount, there's no factory mounts between engine and crossflow mounts, for a custom system. I also supplied 2 sets of the cat brackets, in case they could adapt something either side, or for ideas, luckily didn't.

That's crazy! Now, I know my car isn't stock but I would think that would make it tougher...
I had no problem with fitment of my pypes kit but, I haven't installed the splinters yet, it just the basic kit. I have them and their elbow coupler but haven't had time or the urge to install them yet. Now, the hangers they supplied were absolute junk universal things. If I was to do it again, I would use 3/8" rod and rubber isolators like modern cars. But like above, I only have the hangers in the seat location and the tip area.

Wellington, you must have had some incompetent folks installing that kit. Mine was pretty straight forward even adapting it to a modern engine.  I installed it on a few hours just laying on my back...

Yes, my system went in pretty smooth. Everything fit nicely other than a couple of cuts I had to make for length. Likewise I had a shop do the same system on my 77 and the only problem they had was that the mufflers were wrong and had to be re-ordered. I looked at some pics of original cars and did not see any other hangers other than that on the cat. I also saw some cars with newer exhaust and it looked like those 2 spots were it. So I will assume thats what I will do. I just figured it was a long run and a bit of a strain from the manifold all the way back to the rear seat with no support. I guess its the contractor in me thinking that way.

I am adding some hangers that will bolt up to the floor under the rear seats, not stock but I don't care, I feel the system needs more support

Yikes! Those npd hangers are ridiculous. I will find something from NAPA if I have to. Save the leftover money for gas!

That's for when you really proud of your stock exhaust and expect detail pics, hard to even see those top ones to show off at all! The same units can be had for $50 less elsewhere, still expensive, though.

Thought I saw others repro'ing them prior to a big store. Will check when home as saved pics for the original vs repro thread. They may even be in it.
I might add a pic of how the exhaust shop mounted mine to SFC's, not pretty but does the job and removable.

I was working under the car so took some quick pics of the dusty exhaust hangers. You can only just make out the previous tabs where the hangers were cut and relocated. 2.5" Pypes.

So from your pictures, Those hangers are just held on with Self Tapping Screws...That's interesting. I guess I will order a set of those hangers. That will make the change over really easy. Thanks For The Very Clear Pictures...

So you are going to order the expenses ones or did you find something close that will work?

I may not be able to get them from Auto Zone, but that's the Walker P/N. That was just the cheapest I found them at the time. Some other place, I think they were like $13.00. I'm getting rid of the original Transverse Muffler. And the original Hangers on my car are Steel Rods welded to the tail pipes. One side is broken and the other side is bent down...Was that way when I got the car.

Big self-tappers, yes haha. Those are the GM original large threaded hex screws, approx 5/16", same as what the brake and fuel lines use. The holes are already there just like about the rear axle. May not be fully threaded if never cut into with screw.

Thanks for that information...Now that you mention it, and with your pictures, I bet the factory original  brackets are already there. I'm doing this blind, Where the car is, its hard to get to, and harder to see. I'm wondering now if the reason the one is broken off and the other is bent is because they have been replaced at some muffler shop. This poor car had a really sordid history. Funny fact...The original owner refused to talk to me until I showed him pictures of the car in my possession, and the Bill Of Sale. Lots of litigation over the accident and responsibility.
