Exhaust pipe gaskets???
« on: January 31, 2024, 09:32:56 PM »
I'm refreshing the exhaust on my 78 T/A. I have new manifold gaskets. What (if any) gaskets go in the Y pipe connections to the manifolds, and between the square flanges at either end of the catalytic converter? Thanks.

No gaskets in those areas if still original style.

Interesting.  I remember by 79 301 car using a fiber ring with silver paste on it. But not sure if other models us it.

Might be model specific or brand of exhaust etc. Some joints use that cone ring also but still no gasket. I had a quick look at some exhaust diagrams, only a few, they show gaskets elsewhere if they exist but none in these locations, so I added that since no one else was replying. Aftermarket or stock replacements may be different, a seal probably doesn't hurt either, if it has trouble...sealing.

Service Manual states that due to the ball seal type sleeves and slotted-joins that the need for gaskets are eliminated from the factory system. Sealing paste may be used if needed. Lots of diagrams, drag it out for a look.

I have a low mileage original Y pipe in my attic.  I'll check it today as I must be remembering wrong as I swear I bought a gasket for that spot but my memory is fading.....

Yup, I am losing it.... There were no provisions for gaskets on the exhaust I had in the attic.
