Hurricane Ian Flooded 73 Trans Am
« on: November 15, 2022, 10:05:40 PM »
Ran across this on YouTube and thought I'd share here.
Interesting attempt to save a 73 T/A that was submerged in several feet of salt water during Hurricane Ian.  :-(

Couple of videos so far.

Without a 100% disassembly,  extremely thorough deep cleaning and rinsing, and anti-corrosion coating- one day the rust will return.  WE saw the same situation on TAC back in the early 2000's.  A TAC member's Brewster in Louisiana or Texas (can't remember which member lived where anymore)  was submerged and subsequently sold to another TAC'er.  Literally a complete teardown and rinsing.  Those little body crevasses that you can't even see in, or get your smallest brush in, hold dried salt water.  I hope they succeed, but I would never attempt it myself.

I agree with Mike, salt water is very corrosive, as time passes it will rust. Inside the body, doors, trunk lid etc. Seats need to be torn apart or frames will rust. Same for gage cluster. The list goes on and on. The car would need to be completely disassembled and chemically stripped. It’s too bad because it’s looks like it was a nicely done car. Less than 5,000 73 TA’s built. So for the right price it would be worth doing.

I hope they at least took out the seats and carpet as well. Don't see it in the video's.

Ya, looks to me like it's going through a quick flip restoration. Kinda sad. Feel bad for the buyer actually.

Was thinking the same after watching the first video, that a full tear down will be needed at a minimum. But they address that at the end of the second video by saying they're planning a complete disassembly and cleaning, and also aren't planning on reselling it.

Hope they do more videos showing the progress.

Quite a bit of interest about this car on the PY forum.
I learned something new,
Someone posted about a product specifically for cleaning out and sealing metal from salt water emersion. So maybe there is hope for it and other hurricane cars if done right.

Chemical dip would be the only peace of mind solution I'd go with for that car.

Hope the title reflects a total loss so at least someone can question it....

I remember that car Mike.  That was "the hulk", and didn't someone purchase it and restore it?

Yes,  I think he went by Brewster.  It was a very long restoration, as I recall, due to issues that kept popping up.
