What is the correct Spare Tire Inflator for 1980 T/A?
« on: August 01, 2022, 07:30:43 AM »
I have been searching for the correct space saver tire inflator for my 1980 T/A.   I have seen on ebay part # 9590678 which I think is for a 14" tire and # 9590400 which maybe for the 15" tire.   Does anyone know what the correct space saver tire inflator part # is for a 1980 T/A?

9590678 is correct for yours, 14" space saver.
9590679 is 15" to suit disc cars. 9590400 is another application I can't find immediate info on, it supersedes another unknown number.

I just checked and my Goodyear space saver spare is a G78-15 tire which would be a 15" tire.  Would the 9590678 inflator still be the correct one as that is for a 14" tire?

I have a 1980 TA, with rear drum brakes. I purchased the car in February of 2020 with 6600 certified miles. The car still had the original Uniroyal tires and what I believe is the original unused spare and inflator. The inflator has a part number of 9590679, says it's good for F78-14, G78-14, G78-15 and P205/75 15. I don't know if this information helps or adds to the confusion.

The part number on the inflator is 9590679

Yes that helps as my space saver is a G78-15 just likes yours.   I'm the original owner of y 80 T/A and that is the space save tire that came in it.   I chucked the inflator many years ago and trying to get it back to original.    How is your inflator stored and clamped with the jack?
Thanks!

My inflator was just lying in the spare tire, not really clamped down. I have included a photo from the GM assembly manual, (Upper left photo) showing how it should be clamped by the jack base. I tried that and found the inflator bottle was too long. I ended up just using a zip tie, kind of a Rinky Dink solution. Figuring it out is on my to do list. If you find a way, let me know.

That is very helpful as my build sheet shows N65 for space saver as shown in your diagram on the top left.   I will now search and try to find a 9590679 bottle.  Once I find one and will try to install per diagram and let you know.
Thanks

what's the capacity of the bottle? Assume it was slightly more than the 14" to cater for more tyre capacity, also makes sense it would slowly replace the earlier bottle and part number. You can see the applications for each part number at top right.

I looked at my build sheet and I have the WS4 (Trans Am) build which matches the upper right application diagram, as Wellington noted, which the 9590679 bottle is correct for my car and 5th TA's car.   My guess it the T/A's came with 15" space saver tires and the Firebirds came with 14" tires.
Thanks for all the sleuthing.

As far as I know they are able to be re-filled but can't find anyone that does that.   Back in the day, the dealers were able to do it per the label on the bottle.

Just as a curiosity. I have a very early build (sept) 77 T/A. The invoice said that the 'spare tire is not available at this time' and will be shipped when they become available.

On the '76 that I ordered,I selected the full size spare tire that was a no-cost option over the inflator tire.

Johnny Ace, did the tire come with the car when you got it or did you have to wait? I wonder how long there was a shortage?

Jerry,

I took a quick look at the inflator bottle on my space saver spare. It took about two minutes to get it properly installed. I feel like an idiot because I never looked at the directions.

Here is the label on my trunk lid, probably better-quality graphics than the installation drawings.

5th T/A -  I finally got back to this and took a pic of how I placed the space saver bottle.  I was able to fit the bottle down first, then the jack stand, then the jack lift per instructions.  I had to position the jack stand where the long part covered the bottled and it fit like the instruction label said.   Looks like your bottle is on top of the jack stand and then the jack lift part was on top.   It's hard to tell in the instruction label where the bottle goes but it looks like both of us were able to snug up the bottle.
