Connecting factory cruise control to quadrajet.
« on: July 26, 2022, 12:07:54 PM »
I removed my factory cruise control several years ago on my 1979 Trans Am Olds 403.  It has a quadrajet carburetor.  I recently reinstalled the cruise control system and hooked up all the vacuum lines.  The only thing left to do is connect the rod/linkage from the vacuum pod to the quadrajet.  Does anyone have a photograph of this connection on their car that I could use to make sure I've connected mine properly?

Unless the 403 hook up differs from the 400 I dont think there is a rod and linkage  that connects to the carb. My unit only has the vacuum lines. But then again my doesnt work!

403 is different than 400. I could be wrong but I believe the 403 servo mounts to the intake as opposed to the firewall like the 400 setup does. I don’t have a photo but let me dig around and see.

Best picture I could find on the interwebs after a short search but maybe it’ll help

Good find Brian. Of course, that "stupid" EGR valve is in the way.

Every engine is different (within reason).  I guess mostly constrained by the space under the hood.

So you need the actual parts for a 403 and the shop manual does illustrate all of them, I think (again, within reason).

Good job on that picture with the EGR valve delete.

What year manual did you pull that from? I perused my 77 and couldn’t find any 403 references though I thought the 403 was in California and high altitude cars. Could be wrong though. Even looked at a 78 manual. Maybe I missed it.

I should’ve known you’d pull through with a good pic too wallington!  :-D

That's for the '78 Service Manual. Did you have a copy?

Make sure that the linkage connecting the diaphram to the carb has no excess play.  If it does, then the engine will surge repeatedly when the cruise is engaged.  Mine did this when the car was new and that was the fix.

Also, make sure you clock (rotate the rear case) the alternator to get that primary terminal away from the cruise servo. Don't want to short out the alternator and start a fire!

Good info. On a 403 the alternator only goes one way, of course, it could be the wrong one as noted.
