Headers for 4 speed
« on: May 17, 2021, 08:06:52 AM »
Replacing the 305 Chevy engine with 350 in my 1981 Formula. Does anyone know of headers that will work without modification to the 4 speed linkage, z bar, and reverse column lock out assembly? Thanks!

I don't, but it seems to me it's a Camaro question, and that actually is helpful.  Mechanically, the car is going to be a 1979 4-speed Camaro.  I actually googled it, but I didn't do very well with that.

Like for instance here be some informed opinions on this exact question:

dime a dozen.....pick your brand. inless you are going for super competition (hooker) or some other 1 7/8 primary....most anything will work. NOTE: you will need to remove a little a-arm brace from the lower crossmember ....if your is still there.
And YES it is now called a camaro (via the chevy power)

Thanks for the replies guys. I researched all of the usual sites and brands and almost all state that the reverse lock out assembly would have to be removed to clear the header. mmmmmm, maybe I could confirm fitment with a call to the supplier. - thanks for the input. Unfortunately the Chevy 305 was the only engine available with the 4 speed in 1981. - And yes I always have to list the vehicle as a camaro when searching for mechanical parts. 🤨

Have you thought about Shorty headers?  Not sure if that would give you more room for the linkage or not but worth a look.

Check Hedman. I have their headers for my Pontiac 400 and they clear the reverse lock out linkage. Not sure if they do the same for Chevy engine

Yep— checked on the shorties and mid length headers too 81 Blackbird.- They cleared the lockout assembly but had lots of other problems. Savage Larry may have the answer on this one— the majority of the user reviews included comments like “ best fitting headers I have ever used, and “ I was able to install without removing the reverse lock out assembly.— a few more indicated they had to slightly modify one of the column rods a bit...... So it looks like I will be giving the Hedmans a try. I’ll post the results. Thanks to all the experts that posted solutions . You guys are the reason I joined this group!
