Title: Spotted!!! Any year of bird
Post by: Nexus on June 11, 2021, 06:46:13 AM
Post pictures of those birds you spotted while out and about. Make sure you can get the picture safely of course!! Only rule is that it can't be your own car!!

I'm not as knowledgeable with the 3rd gens but I'm thinking it's a late 80's or early 90's based on the taillights, assuming they haven't bee changed.

84 or 85. 86 had the third brake light on the top of the window. I think that rear spoiler was used through 85, whale tale may have been an option (my 85 had the whale tale, also convex wheels which I think were the equivelant to the w72?) I think that aero package may have been an option in 84. I will say 85, nice looking car. Mine was silver with a grey bottom accent.

As to the original intent of this post, good luck on my part, LOL, about the only firebirds I see in my area are in my garage. I will keep an eye out though.

Ha, I spoke too soon. I had a bit of travelling for work today. I spied a 79 firebird sitting at a body shop (may be able to get a pic monday as I will be travelling by again) and saw a 69 firebird at a business.

I see very few around town. Even our local Cars and Coffee where hundreds of cars turn out each week, a Firebird is a rare appearance.
But sounds like a fun thread.

Same in my area Gene. I am usually the only Firebird/T/A at anything local. Although I know a guy with a beautifully restored 69 bird and he also owns a couple of formulas, a 79 and a 96. He said he bought the 79 for a daily dr. but I have never seen it on the road. My old secretary that lives about a mile from my house has a 68 convertible that her husband has owned since the very early 70's, also a perfect restoration, and again I dont think I have seen that car on the road for at least 4 or 5 years. Funny enough there is another 68 convertible, exact same colour as my old secretarys car, about 2 miles in the opposite direction, and they do not know each other. I have seen that guy at the gas station every once in awhile, each time he says its for sale but I think he still has it. Theres a 67/68 hardtop under a tarp yet again, less than a few miles form my house.  I know of a couple more, one in a field, another under a tarp beside a trailer. So, there are quite a few within a stones throw but rarely see any others on the road.

Not random spotting's but here they are nonetheless.
The 78 was at a car show the other day and the 79 was at a cruise night a week or two ago.

I stopped in and talked to the guy. It's a 403 car. Been repainted some time ago. The owner bought it many years ago, he's 80 now.

I have a neighbor around the block with a red 73 TA. According to his wife it is fresh out of a ten year restoration. I have seen him driving through the neighborhood a couple of times, but I am not fast enough with my phone to get a picture. Several times while walking the dog I noticed his garage door up with the car sitting inside. I don’t want to take a picture in the garage without his permission. Sooner or later I will get a good shot of it.

Well, this is kind of cheating cause i haven’t seen any lately but here are a few pictures from the last three years. There aren’t a ton of first/second gen birds around that I’ve seen.

First is a 69 I ran across in 2018. My buddy and I tried to go to a local show that ended up being cancelled cause of heat if I remember right. A guy around my age also showed up with the 69. He had just moved from Saginaw, Mi I think but there was a chance of him going to Columbus if I remember right. Haven’t seen the car since then.

Next is a 6 banger 67 or 68 from a show in 2019. I thought it was cool it still had the 6.

Later that year I stopped at another show and saw two 76s. One had what looked like C&C t-tops and the other was a firethorn red car with original paint. The kid driving it said it belonged to his dad in high school.

Last is a guy who approached me about my car asking about window sweeps. He had his wife and mother in law at the show with the mother in laws 81 T/A. She bought it new and they had apparently recently gotten it road worthy again and brought it to the show. It was very clean looking.

I’m sure I have more from other shows over the years but I’d have to dig. There is a guy with a black 70 Firebird I see occasionally and another guy with a 70 or 71 T/A that used to be a firefighter in a small town I used to work for.

Kinda hard to see, but the best pic I could get at 30mph. The red car to the right is a Firehawk.  Its about a 2 1/2 dr from my house, close to the neighborhood of a good customer of mine. I am in the area about 2 or 3 times a year and for the last couple of years the car doesnt seem to have moved. I have been tempted to stop in and check its status.

Don't see many of these.
A guy down the street had one just like that.  Sat covered I the driveway.  Never saw it move.  He also had a Buick GN.  Both looked very nice to start…. GN started to look pretty ratty as time took it’s toll.  Haven’t seen either car for a while.  Pretty sad if they just rotted in place.

This is in my neighborhood about two blocks away, the car I talked about early in this thread. He has owned the car for 15 years and has just about finished a 10 year restoration. He also owns a 66 GTO.

73 Trans Am, Beautiful body and paint work. This picture doesn't do it justice.

This 74 Trans Am is for sale by a local dealer here in central Georgia for the paltry sum of $49,900.00.
I have a great story which I will make brief. I had the opportunity to buy this car in 1986 when I was 17 for $4000.00, of course as a broke teenager it might as well been 4 million.  The owner, who was a super nice guy passed away a couple years ago and at some point it wound up in the possession of a dealer. I wish I had known and had an opportunity to make a generous realistic offer before it changed hands.

Just looked up inflation calculator, $4k equals to $9.5k today... I would have guessed twice that but again I don't think that 76 is worth $50k today.

What if it was an original matching numbers, high compression, 455 HO/SD/RAV, backed up with a 4L80E turbo-clutch, running to a Mack DM800 rear, special ordered with all the correct documentation, and signed by Eddie Rickenbacker? :???:

So I saw the garage door open and this gold TA sitting out again and decided to stop on my way home from work. I figured since I had mine with me it'd be easier to strick up a conversation with him.

It was and the owner is in his 80s and has had the car "forever". His kids used to drive and once when his daughter was in California she decided to have it repainted (like in the late 80s). It has around 59,000 miles on it 403 car. He just had the front seats redone and the covers are there for the rear but they are not done (originals are still decent) interior is vinyl.  Underneath looks great. He said it's for sale if someone is interested for 30K, which seems high but it is a pretty nice car. He'd probably take 25k though...

Over all we had a good talk and he really liked my car and was amazed at how good the black paint looked, which made me feel good (but he is in his 80s....).

I guess I talked to his son the last time I stopped.

You got it Joe, cell phones are banned in MA so had to resort to a Polaroid... Funny enough the Polaroid HD use to be down the street from me and only few years ago it got converted to a supermarket.

Good spot Jack.

A great stance perhaps but whoever was driving had to be hard on the brakes too the way they were coming on the right.

Not really spotted in the wild. Was at a local car show last weekend. My car is typically the only trans am I ever see out. Was surprised when these rolled in, kinda. The 68 belongs to my old secretary and her husband. I know them well just dont see them out that often. He has owned the car since 1971. Has gone through a couple of restorations. Very nice. The 79 belongs to his friend whom I have never met. This guy bought the car brand new. A couple of long term owners.

Nice looking Firebirds, from the photos it looks like exceptional body and paint work. I am often amazed at how many paint jobs are superior to what these cars came out of the factory with.

Like I said, I know the '68, it def is a first rate restoration.  They had it restored quite a few years ago, new NOS quarters put, and a slew of other NOS parts when they were still available. Work was done at a Pontiac dealership. After a few years the car was T Boned at an intersection and it was restored a second time. The 79 is an auto,  hard top. Nice looking car, repaint that was about a 7 out of 10. Int. original.

Travelling just outside of York Pa, saw a forgotten 75 trans am sitting in a parking lot of a repair shop. Looked like it had been there since about 1980! I tried to get a pic but the light turned green. My wife said "dont even thing about it". If I had been myself.............

Charlie,

That Esprit is a real time capsule, looks to be in great shape. If it was bronze in color I would be looking for Jim Rockford.

hahaha...it would've been awesome if he dressed like Jim Rockford even though the car is blue!!

It is amazing that people are able to still drive these around at this time of year. Normally we are hovering around freezing, and shoveling snow and the salt trucks have been out!!

Spotted a poor old decrepit bird in the bushes yesterday. I will post pics later. Surprisingly I caught my wife in the right mood this time (we were on a journey for her) and she said go back and check it out. I knocked with no answer. I did leave my info saying I wanted to purchase. Honestly will be surprised if I hear back. It looks like one of those "Im going to fix it one of these days". I get to the area every couple of weeks, will stop back one more time if I dont hear anything. Looks rough, may only be a parts car.

A black 79 with a silver bird makes for a sharp looking TA.

It’s easy to look at this car and dream about what it could be.

On the other hand my TA has a 2.41 axel ratio that I would love to upgrade. I wonder if this car has a 3.08 or a 3.23?

California Businessman Is Sentenced to 30 Years in $1 Billion Ponzi Scheme
Jeff Carpoff, 50, ran a Ponzi scheme with his wife that sold nonexistent solar generators to investors, prosecutors said.

I spotted another 2000's Trans Am, dark red/burgundy in color. Sadly, I was too busy staring at it to get a picture and when I thought about getting a picture, he was gone!!

The other one I have been driving by for at least 30 years is a black 79/80. The guy seems to like older gm vehicles because the other one he has is a late 80's step side 4x4. I should stop one of these days to chat with the guy!

I have to admit I am envious of your weather being able to hold an event like this in December.

Also when I saw the last photo with the 76 TA I thought it had a badly rusted hood and then realized it was the reflection of the fall colored leaves.

Spotted on TV in a couple of shows. Not quite the original intent but they are still trans ams! First one was on an episode of King of the Hill. One of Lucky's friends was driving one. Another is on the Simpsons, Apu the conv. store owner was driving one.
AND before you flame, yes I watch cartoons. Just about the only intelligent thing on tv these days

I did pass a late model Trans Am going down the road today. White with some kind of flame outlines on the front.

I had a silver with grey bottom '85. Would look nice parked next to a TATA!  I love the 3rd gens. I think the 85's may be my favorite. Unfortunately with the anemic power plants they didnt get a lot of love. I think the prices on really nice ones are starting to go up. My ultimate purchase would be an 83 Daytona pace car. Every once in awhile a nice one comes along. If I ever get another 3rd gen it will be one of those.

I think the red car in the pic is an 85. That was the year the heavy aero package started that are on this car.  86 was the first year with the third brake light, which this car does not have. 85 also had the early style flat rear spoiler standard. I believe the hi-po package (not versed on 3rd gens but I would surmise they had an equivalent w72) used the 'whale tale' and had convex wheels. My 85 was of the hi-po version. 85's def had louvers in the hood.

I just don't see many Firebirds where I live. I just got back from spending a week in Alexandria VA, visiting daughter and grandkids when I ran into this at a park in Arlington. Looks to be a pretty decent survivor, maybe used a daily driver. Far from being perfect, it was parked pretty far from the other vehicles.

The dash was covered in something with a weird texture and gloss red paint.

Anyway it's nice to see them on the road.

1995 Trans AM, 6 speed manual, with about 86,000 kms sitting on fresh rubber!! It belongs to my buddies cousin. Interestingly enough, I thought, is it's sitting exactly where Larry parked his 79 silver trans Am that he had for years, before he sold it!!

My uncle had one similar to that. I believe his was a 96, was also red but was a WS6 so it had the ram air hood. I’m surprised the one you’re in is a hardtop. Didn’t think they made any 4th gen  T/As in hardtop. Maybe that was only for the LS1 cars.

While I’m here, crappy picture but I caught a glimpse of this 3rd gen the other day.

They made hardtops, just not sure there were a lot. My sister had a 96sh formula hardtop. She ordered it new, completely loaded, Dark green, tan leather interior, 6 speed with what I assumed was the highest performance motor available. She hated t tops. She babied the car, She bought something new and parked it in the barn. I know they had it for quite a few years when I asked here about it she said they had sold it. Been nice if she had let me know they were getting rid of it!!

That is a sharp looking 69. Paint and body look great. When I was in high school a kid was driving a new Firebird 400 convertible. It was loaded with AC and power windows, black with black interior. Don’t know where he got got the money, I’ll never forget the car.

Mike, I have been a member of TAC for something like 2 1/2 years and I am clueless as to what you once had or currently have in the way of Firebirds or other vehicles. It would make for an interesting post if you care to share?

Larry, Im not sure you have the time (and I know youre retired) to hear of all the cars Yeti has had! LOL.

Good Spot on the 69.  When I was a kid mom had a 67 400. I assume vedoro green. It was the lighter green colour. Thats when my love of the mighty Firebird began!!

Nobody in my family had muscle cars that I remember, as vehicles were only things used to get you around!

As for the TA I got to sit in, sadly no test drive!!

Hanging out at a local weekly show for the first time this year. It’s hot but I found some shade thankfully. Decent turnout but the heat probably kept some away. Couple birds here.

Thanks for sharing guys, some nice looking cars.

Charlie, nobody in my family had muscle cars until me. When I was about 17 I took my dad for a ride in my 67 Dodge Coronet R/T, smoking the tires and fish tailing. That was his first experience as a passenger in a muscle car. For lack of better words it was not a positive experience for him.

I know for a fact it does.  The owner had me take a look as it was spewing gas.
It was coming from the vent so the float was shot.  We have a very good shop* here that does a lot of old iron, they rebuilt it for under $200 and it runs nicely.

This car while no means quick drives very nicely - the six is verrry smooth.

My wife and I spotted this 1974 Formula while out for a Sunday ride in a small Wisconsin town about 55 miles Northwest of where we live. I believe it's a real Formula, not sure if it was a 455 like the fender badge says. Obviously a repaint but didn't look bad on the outside. The interior seats and doors were reupholstered, not to my taste. I got a big kick out of the Patsy Cline 8 track tape, I wonder if it plays? For me, this is a good find since I usually don't see very many Firebirds of any generation.

As would mine.  The guy who owns was complaining that the 3.08's would not allow him to drive on the freeway

I suggested he find a 2.41 or 2.56 axle and put the 3.08 under the work bench.

I went to a car show on Saturday as a spectator and parked in the general parking area. Came out after looking at the cars and this blue bird was parked beside me. Birds of a feather flock together

I am kind of burnt out on going to shows at this point. I think I only went to about 3 or 4 since the season started in spring. This one on Saturday, like most of the shows in my area has the same cars. I think out of the 100 or so cars there, I saw maybe a dozen that were 'new to me'. I dont have the patience to sit for hours and do nothing. I had more fun driving my T/A there, spending 40 minutes or so looking at the cars then taking a long hour drive home.
Having said that, I registered for the the AACA fall meet in Hershey on Friday the 7th. I have been going for years this will be my first time taking a car. I am signed up in the driver participation class. I have no idea if that gets judged or not. I dont it does.

It is just a blank off plate with a fake cap...

Saw this as I was leaving.  1968 Fiat 850 Sport Spider w 90k miles.  Almost nonexistent now due to rust issues.  My dad bought a 72 in 74, he loved that car.  I drove it on special occasions in HS.  1,300 pounds with a 903cc motor.

A "blank-off" plate? Don't understand. For the heater/AC box? Why is there liquid lines going in and out of it.
And in your photo, you don't mention the T/A. Is it a 70, or 71? 400, or 455? Get to talk to the owner?

It is a cover for the wiring going to the fusebox - no hoses.

The T/A is mine - a 79 redone front and rear; LS3 EROD with TKO600.

Wow. I didn't know you had that car. (didn't even notice the roof, till you said it was a 79). Surprised with all the work, you didn't change it, to an earlier roof. A job well done. As for the fuse box cover on the 3rd gen, pretty clever. Strange, but clever. Good to see your car being used, and enjoyed.
Title: Re: Spotted!!! Any year of bird
Post by: scarebird on October 15, 2022, 08:48:11 PM
no, roofs of that vintage are hard to find and more work for less visibility.  Were I to do it over I would have gone with a 74-75 front/rear - much easier!  It weighs 3,340 pound empty so with LS3 power and sorted suspension it is a joy to drive.

The guy that bought the GTA and did not even know what size motor he had...

A "Mustang II"? Disgusting. The only good Mustang II I ever saw was in a Car Craft mag. (maybe late 70s), where Jack Roush took a fastback, and stuffed a 429 between the fenders. with a c6, and a 9". I'm sure the cornering wasn't something to write home about. Try and visualize that.

I made a comment about a cold air cowl hood on a "Brand X" site recently, and it turned into a real slug-fest session with some creepo comments, that I thought was gunna get me tossd. (A lot of 3rd gen people take it offensively when someone puts an actual Pontiac motor, in a Pontiac).

Not a Trans Am, Firebird or even a Pontiac. I saw this modified GMC/Chevy pickup tonight at a local Bar & Grille / Pizza place and it made me smile. Picture quality is not great as it was dark. It had several Pontiac emblems, arrowhead on the wheel center caps and the shaker hood that does not shake. Shaker says 455, who knows what it really has. I would have loved to talk to the owner.

Not a bird but I think it is a worthy Pontiac exception.
1970 Pontiac GTO Judge. Dad picks up garbage around the area occasionally and its been sitting outside since summer untouched. Tempting to go bang on their door and ask what they are doing leaving that thing on the street in the elements.

HAH, my dads a garbage man so he's in his garbage truck. Snapped a picture when he drove by.

Checked on the car today 35 minutes from my house. No one was home so I left my number. Definentally no engine and flat tires it's been there a while. Neighbor was really sketchy but oh well, thought we were stealing it I guess.

Zach,

A real 1970 Judge is not that common and deserves a good home. maybe you or your dad can be that person. I hope this car can find a good home from someone who will appreciate it for what it is.

A good friend of mine owned one, I have lots of behind the wheel time on the street and the track. Love the look and feel of these.

I would absolutely love to grab this thing but it's unlikely the owners are willing, im bringing a parent next time just so they take me more seriously and hopefully have someone answer the door. 1970 is my least favorite out of the 3, 69 close to being my dream car, but hell, its potentially a real judge or even a real nice gto if anything, which is already a pretty insane find in that condition for Minnesota. That machine would get a full time garage spot next to the T/A.

I found this amazing vintage car salvage yard about 30 mins from my house. I was looking for some Tri5 parts, but stumbled on the Fbody section. Found some cars that need to be restored!

I got some sheet metal, trim and a steering wheel for my 55, but I will 100% be back and will probably start buying and selling parts from his place. His prices are very reasonable and I'm certain that I could find some really hard to find parts.

Saturday May 20th was the Cruisin Tigers Pontiac Club monthly meeting. Except for Pontiac daily drivers most members only bring their cars when the weather is decent.

This is an original owner 1975 Formula. The owner said this car has outlasted several marriages! Originally came with a 170HP 400 hundred and four speed. Obviously custom paint. Now has a Butler built 462. Five speed transmission, much better brakes and suspension. Sorry I didn't take more or better pictures.

1981 Turbo TA, I did not talk to the owner, looked to be 100% stock.

Not a Firebird but I liked this 1964 TriPower Four Speed GTO. I talked to the owner who had one during the mid 60's. Everything about this car was perfect, other than the wheels looked like it was driven straight from the dealer. The owner said his original GTO wasn't anywhere near this nice. Sorry I didnt take more or better photos, I snapped these real quickly before the meeting. After meeting got deep into conversation and forgot about taking pictures.

All caught up!

I didn't actually see this one but my cousin hauls cars back and forth from southern Ontario to the east coast and he brought this back to Toronto. The buyer paid, around $20,000.00 Canadian for it, and apparently, it needed work but it wasn't too bad. It's a 1980 Trans Am (obviously) that came (not sure if still has) with the 301 4 barrel built in Norwood, based on the VIN number.

Saw this guy on my way home from work the other day. I 95 just north of D.C. Looked original, pretty decent shape missing the whale tail. I know the earlier 3rd gen cars not quite sure of the year on this one. Def a GTA, did not see a third brake light but I dont think they made these in '85 (light may have been in the wing). I didnt think the GTA's came out until at least '87 or so.

'88 sounds right. I am guessing the third light was in the spoiler only.

I am yet to see a 1979-1981 Trans Am or Firebird in ANY car show in southern California over the past 10 years. I stopped daily driving my 81 TA back in 2000 and even then, I would only see one once a year. They must be truly rare in my part of the world.

I rarely see any trans ams at shows in my area. A lot of the time I am the only one. I was at a show a couple of weekends ago and there were maybe 150 cars. There was a 65 GTO, a 56 Pontiac, my sons 04 GTO a G8 sedan and my trans am. That was it for Pontiacs. As we were leaving a fourth gen trans am was coming in.

Last year at a big all pontiac show the contingent of second gen birds was uncommonly light. Again out of about 200 cars I think there were less than 20 second gen trans ams. Show is in a couple of weeks I am curious how the turnout will be.

The rarity applies to the 1980-1981 Camaro too. Can't recall seeing more than one in the past 10 years. as well.

Yeah, Charlies done better than me. At least he's "seen" a second gen. Slim pickins now-a-days.
