Title: Antwerp, Belgium
Post by: Nightstalker88-98 on November 23, 2018, 05:48:39 PM
I just found out my car was originally sold through "GM Continental Military Car Sales, Antwerp, Belgium". I'm thinking it was sold via the PX and picked up in the States. But I still think that's interesting.

I received build sheet from PHS. really nice quality.

What's PX? Did someone buy it while in Belgium but picked it up when they came back to the states?

PX is Post Exchange, kind of like a department store on military bases. When you are stationed overseas you can order a car through one of the services provided by the Exchange. You tell them the options you want, then the manufacturer builds it. If the car gets shipped to your overseas location then you do not have to pay taxes on it. Once you get back stateside though, whatever state you get stationed in will make you pay their tax rate, but at the cost of the vehicle currently, not the cost of it when it was new.

So in essence you might be able to skate a little bit of money by doing it that way.

OP: Was the car driven in Antwerp? Would have been pretty cool to cruise a Firebird around those little streets back then.

Interesting history of the car. My brother was overseas back in the 80's and he got me home stereo equipment through the PX. If I remember correctly the prices for major items like that were about 30% less than what I could get retail. I think that the cars were considerably cheaper too. His wife at the time got a new MGB at a reduced rate. Another story he told me was that where you enlisted was considered your home state, a lot of guys would go through NC as there was no state sales tax at the time.

Very interesting, I wonder if similar programs still exist today... but I don't think so.
