Back in early February I bought a 1971 Firebird that was in nice shape. I went looking for a Formula hood for it because  I have always loved the formula scoop hoods. I found a really nice original hood located in Albuquerque and looked into it. As it turned out I got myself into a much bigger proposition than just buying a hood.

The seller had informed me that he was selling a lot of Firebird stuff as well as 2 Firebirds ( a 1970 base Firebird and a 1972 Formula 400). So we started talking , and I started asking...

There was quite a bit of stuff. I asked what the price would be for the whole lot, although I did not think I would buy it all. There was quite a bit of stuff and some very great stuff. Well, I ended up taking the offer for the whole nine yards.

So my girlfriend and I talked about it and decided to go for it. We flew down to Albuquerque, rented a Uhaul truck and a trailer , and brought it all back to Las Vegas.

Whatt I got was a complete 72 Firebird and a project 1970 Firebird. In the deal there was everything to finish the 70 bird, and literally a ton of parts (we filled up the 24 ft truck!) we brought the 72 back on the trailer and I will have the 70 next week.

Both cars are pretty rust free with no major body issues. Although the 72 was complete it will need some work to get it on the road. The 70 did not have the motor installed but in the deal I got a RAIII 400 engine with it. There was also a rebuilt 72 455 engine that was complete.

In addition to the cars, there were a lot of great parts in the deal.

The 70-73 Firebirds were my favorite Firebirds. So now I’m gonna sort through everything and come up with a game plan. I’m also going to consider attending an addiction threrapy group.

Here is the 72 Firebird, it has a 400 and is complete and original, no rust,

This is the 1970 Firebird, it’s under cover but has a great body with no rust or major issues. It also has a 400 motor which I believe is a RAIII block.

I am really looking forward to starting these projects. I plan to do them concurrently but first I am going to finish my 1972 LeMans convertible . Right now I am getting the LeMans ready for the paint shop.

Congrats, and honeycombs love it.
BTW - I'm assuming the base 70 did not have 12 bolt rear?

WOW! Not even MY find and it gives me goose bumps! (Or maybe that's the 30 degrees and ice/snow storm I woke up to this morning?) Great catch and definitely more fun than money!

Jim, I do believe you need help and some intensive therapy. But... looks like a great score. Youre on the way to becoming a Pontiac dealer! Now youre gonna need a bigger garage.

Yeah I think I need therapy for sure. However I think you can become a dealer in Nevada if you have 5 cars! Haha! The big find was all the parts. Its gonna take a while to sort through all of it. I did get the extra Formula hood I was originally looking for, but in addition I did get several Ram Air dual snorkel cleaners with the mounting rings for the hoods. Also 4 endura noses with buckets (one is not restorable, the rest are in good shape). There were 5 sets of rims, (3 turbo wheel sets, 1 rallyII set, 1 15x7 snowflakes) and about a half dozen carburetors. The is also a lot more stuff I have not gone through yet that are in boxes and crates. Definitely more than enough stuff to put both cars back into original shape.

Nice find! Although the early second gens aren't my personal favorite, I love Formulas.

Nicely done, sir. I learned, as you did, when  a guy wants out don't think you can't afford it all. They're usually motivated to get it gone for whatever price they can get. Enjoy the projects.

So today I was unpacking the truck load of parts. I came about the box with carburetor stuff and to my surprise there were 3 really nice rebuilt QJs. They appear as if they were new but it certainly looks like they are in great shape. There are also several QJ's that were complete but not rebuilt. I found one from 1970 and another from 1972. Another nice surprise was some NOS stuff. I found a pair of Camel tan arm rests that were still in a GM box. There were also 2 Ram Air air cleaners , one I believe was a 70 or 71 because it had the mounting studs for the air cleaner brackets, the other was from a 72/73 because it didn't have the studs.
I also counted five sets of Turbo rims, they were all in good shape, but since I haven't a need for them I will most likely sell those. The honey comb rims on the 72 are 15x7's, as well as the rally II rims. There is also a set of 15x7 snowflake rims that are in really nice shape.
I got 4 endure nose bumpers , one of which is shot , but still has all the brackets and headlight stuff. The other 3 are certainly restorable. The are a lot of trim pieces and most are in good shape.
The list goes on and on.. and on..
Most likely I will not be using all of it , I really only intend to restore the three cars and there is quite a bit of stuff for the later years (including GEN 3 &4 stuff). Stuff that I wont be using most likely I will sell.

Nice Bonus.  You might be able to recoup some decent change selling those off.  Congrats on the finds.

Right now I am finishing the LeMans and getting it ready for paint. However I have been thinking about what I will do when I start the 3 Firebirds.
For now, I am planning on doing a freshening up on the 71. Mainly I am going to install new shocks and springs, exhaust and some interior and electrical work. Eventually I plan on an LS Swap to replace the 350.

For the 1972 & 1970 Firebirds I am going to restore them back to a stock like condition. The 70 I will make that a Lucerne blue Trans Am clone with a 400 motor and TH400 transmission.
For the 72 (it was an Espirit originally), I plan on keeping that one mostly as well. It has a 400 with a 2V carb and I plan on installing a 4v quadrajet. Of course I got some time to think about the plan, but I am excited about finishing the LeMans for now.

I just received the PHS documents today. I found out that both the 70 and 72 were originally delivered to the same dealership in Albuquerque. The 70 was originally Lucerene Blue with blue interior. It was a base Firebird with 350 with AC. I already knew the 70 was a base so it wasn't that big of a surprise. The 72 Firebird was an Espirit with a 400 2v Carb. Originally it was revere silver with gray Cordova top, and the interior was blue. I thought that was kinda different combo. At some point in time a previous owner elected to paint it white, remove the Cordova top, add a formula hood, install the rally gauges, and then add 15x7 Honeycomb rims. The 72 also has the Formula Steering wheel as well. I guess a previous owner really wanted a Formula Firebird vs an Esprit model.

Nothing wrong with a base bird if it has a factory 350, and the 72-400 is good as well especially with all of the formula add ons. Any early pontiac v8 has decent power even a 350.

The 72 is pretty much complete, it also has a TH400 transmission. The 70 doesn't have a motor (although I did get a 455 and a 400 engine with in the deal). I am planning on using the 400 in the 70 Firebird with a 4speed manual ( or maybe a TH400 trans). On the 72 I am going to replace the 2V carb with a 4V. Certainly the early 70 motors put out some great HP/TQ specs, and the plan is to rebuild both 400 engines with only slight improvements to bump up the HP. My plan is to restore both cars to a stock type condition, sorta... :) 

I am thinking about the 70 FB becoming a Trans Am clone is Lucerne Blue. When I purchased the cars there were more than enough parts to do that, however I would need to purchase a Trans Am hood other than that I have all the additional stuff to make it a correct Trans Am clone.
