Title: TRANS AM BUILD THAT LEFT THE RESERVATION
Post by: WOLF1732 on September 13, 2016, 05:22:21 PM
I went to SEMA last year and looked at how the industry has changed in the last 36 years. And the battle of the builders caught my attention. The builds they were doing was nothing like what I have started. When I got back I drug the car out of moth ball and started to get set up to build this car.
This was my high school car that I started on in 1980. At the time I was working at an automotive machine shop. I cut the rear out of the car to tub it and connect the subframe. Well then I got a job at a  road race fabrication shop and then I cut the front end off the car and built a front suspension and frame. The next year I got a job in and Indy car fab shop and built some pretty cool cars for the next few years and didn't touch the car. In 1985 I left the Indy car world and started a business and didn't have time to work on the car but in spits and starts off and on. The car sat in the back of my building till last September when I said self lets finish this car. So for the last year I have been working on this project a couple of hours per day when I can and I have hired a good fabricator to come in and give me a hand trying to push the build forward.  After reading and looking at these pictures you may tell me to get  professional mental help. It has been a on going challenge to bring this car up to 2016 standards when it was started in 1980. So it looks like no pictures for now.

I would love to post pictures but I cant seem to make it work. I tried for an hour last night and gave up.
The directions don't seem to match photo bucket and image shack.I don't  see how to link back to this site.

Goes right inside the body. It's 40" tall at ride height. some cutting was required.

When people say they build cars, they often mean they restore, refurbish, or reassemble cars.

You, my friend, are an authentic car builder. Not to say I would ever want to learn what you know, since I don't have the need for it. But I respect it very much.

How do you cut every piece to be the exact perfect length and weld it all together with nothing out of whack? Do you use precision measuring or just tape measures?

In 1980 I drew a 1/2 scale full drawing of the car and frame and the suspension. Today I use Solid Works I will post some pictures of the rear end and such later.

Ummm, is that going to be street driven?

If so, let me be the first here to say, "get mental help" LOL you asked for it.

There now that that's out of the way, I'm cheering for you to get it done.

What year body is it? How stock are you planning to keep the body looking?

Yep street car all the way. Don't want the ice cream to melt do you? It started life as a 1974 455TA my high school car. It will look like a 1974 TRAN AM that went to the future and returned. It will need to be a little bulgier than stock to get the tires under it. Heat and AC and all the creature comforts. Just a daily driver.

Title: Re: TRANS AM BUILD THAT LEFT THE RESERVATION
Post by: WOLF1732 on September 21, 2016, 07:48:59 AM
I need some help guys. Where do you think is the best area and look to exit the exhaust pipes?? The pipes are 3.500 in dia. Should they exit straight out to the rear parallel to the ground like a stock 1974 or exit at the rear of the tires angled out and down? I have mocked both up and just can't decide. The area rear of the tires will be straighter than factory due to the 355 tire size. What you think??

the car is going to look amazing . when I get to doing my exhaust I will be exiting mine through the lower part of the quarter panels. never seen this done on a 2nd gen before
Title: Re: TRANS AM BUILD THAT LEFT THE RESERVATION
Post by: nas t eh on September 21, 2016, 09:48:28 AM
Given all the modification to the car so far and what else is going to happen, I think I would be trying to get as close to stock looking as I could on this part, just so it still looks a bit like what it was when it was born.

I like the idea of going with the "look" of the original 74 pipes but not as long so they are tucked under the bumper a bit more than the originals.

WELL 1980 CRASHED INTO 2016 and my 9 INCH FORD FLOATER HOUSING. Had to cut a bunch off structure out of the way for new rear end and 3-1/2" exhaust pipes.
That has caused me to have a bad attitude.

I guess I will let Eric get the exhaust pipes finished,I will see how to put the structure back in the car . Hope by then my frustration has passed. You guys know this dance one step forward and two steps backwards.

3.5" tubing is a pain to route. It'll all work out in the end.

I kicked mine very slight up (paralleling body pinch weld) and kicked inward - sort of like the 70-73 Camaro's did it.  See how the body starts tapering inward - I tried to follow that, have all the lines flow together...  As you know the exhaust has cooled significantly out of the muffler so you could drop down to 3" with no flow penalty.

One other interesting thing that I ran into this week. I went over to my engine builder and we got TCI on the phone to order the transmission. I had got my pile of money together $6500.00 so we were on the phone with TCI going down the check list of can the 6speed automatic handle the 800 foot pounds of torque, check.  Can it handle a 1000 hp , check. Does it has engine braking , NO !!! what--- ,NO-- he says again. Brakes squealing full stop. WTF they claim it is for pro touring ???? So I fell back and  punted. The take away from this is be sure you ask a lot of questions and have a check list of what you need.

Cool build. I will be watching your progress. I have often wondered how do you build something like this and try to design it so it can be worked on fairly easy after the fact. Must take alot of head scratching
Title: Re: TRANS AM BUILD THAT LEFT THE RESERVATION
Post by: firebirdparts on October 09, 2016, 12:06:43 PM
I did not realize they were making an aftermarket 6 speed automatic.  Is there some underlying GM transmission that they are modifying to get that?

I have a hard time believing they wouldn't have engine braking.  As far as I can tell, that has always been considered necessary for every automatic ever built.  Would be interesting to find somebody who already has one and find out for yourself.

Exhaust finished!!! I started getting structure back in chassis and looking at sheetmetal. But I must leave for deer camp for a week to take care of bambie.
Trying to decide if I want to go to SEMA this year or go to PRI this year. I have a customer that wants me to go to SEMA and look at some stuff for them. tuff being forced to go to SEMA. Must go get deer therapy and ponder. :D

Ordered the rear wheels today. Forgeline GW3R  due in on Nov 28 . This will allow me to check some clearance questions on the front suspension . I hope a 12" wide wheel will work in the front so I can run 345's.  Still looking for a transmission. Chevy at SEMA showed a stand alone kit for the 8L90e. There is also a 10 speed not released for parts yet and no controller. I have ordered the dry sump tank and the ATL fuel cell. The rear end of the car is coming together. Going to drop the body on the chassis to check some clearance questions this week. Will put up some more pictures when I have a few minutes.

Finally rear wheels arrived. Now I can finish the rear end shock locations and move the panhard bar mount on the chassis check clearance on the front suspension to see if a 12 inch wide wheel will work with 335's on the front. The wait has been killing me. So next week I am off to PRI in Indy for the week to shop for more goodies.

I am a TIG fan for the structure in cars but MIG works well for tacking and body panels. TIG can do all materials that can be welded. With TIG you have the ability to control penetration and weld size . A bit slower but you get good results.

I'm curious if there is a significant structural benefit to the sheet metal and if there is, if It follows a general rule or known amount or percentage.

This build represents several phases in my fabrication career. The front end was started when I was working in a NASCAR fab shop for Chuck Gaa. The rear of the car is more like the spots car stuff I built when I was at Fabcar Engineering. The center of the car which I haven't posted any pictures yet shows my IMSA GTP full monocoque Phase of my life, so the chassis ends up being a simi-monocoque tube frame structure. Taking the best from both worlds. If I had a redo it would be a full stressed monocoque with pull rod suspension. With all that being said, correctly designed sheetmetal can add great stiffness to the design and great weight reduction. And it looks cool in the process.

Finally got the body trimmed out and ready to build brackets to mount to the frame so I can get the new roll cage back in. I weighed the body this afternoon and I got it down to 85 lbs not bad for a steel shell. Had some friends help me get the body back on the chassis this afternoon. Going to try to get the body located and a roll bar template made tomorrow. God I am glad to have the body out of the middle of the floor.

Looking good! You still thinking you can fit 335's up front?
Title: Re: TRANS AM BUILD THAT LEFT THE RESERVATION

I have had old 345's on the front for a what if. It looks like it will work. I had started working from the rear to the front. The design for the spindles is done and in solid works , I have the front spindle tooling a crude spindle mockup for fitment built. Just have not got to the front yet. I need about 12 fabricators like you see in these car shows working on my car. All I got is me and the cat and she sleeps a lot on the job.

I am interviewing for a Wild Turkey assistant.

I almost moved to the Macon area when I moved south and had I done that I'd send in my resume and commute! I could learn a lot from someone with your background.

Curious why you prefer the cup style gussets rather than small diameter tubing? While I do a lot of light fabrication I had my cage built by a bud who owns a fab shop that does mostly drag cars and he used tubing. Pic for those following along who might want to see how tubing is used.

The tube brace is a NHRA rule and a drag race thing so they can inspect the welds on 4130 cages and the formed gusset is more a road race thing. I have had several roll cages be involved in some wicked crashes and the formed gussets held even on an aluminum cage on a GTP car from the 1980's. Both work .

I will try to get some pictures up this week. how do you finish a project like this do a little something every day.

I am lucky to have the best press brakes available to me to use.  The hole patterns are nothing special just a Eberhard faber # 705 ( water soluble) pencil and a ruler. draw a line in 3/8 from the edge every place you want rivets and mark them out in 1.0 spacing.  sometimes you will need to make the spacing a little bigger or smaller to get it worked out to the space you have. set a compass to the correct spacing and mark of the center points. then I either drill or punch with a Whitney jr hand punch.

I have not been able to get on any machines at work to make parts for a while. finally got some laser and pressbrake time. and finished the internal bulkheads for the side pods.
Went to caffeine and Octane this weekend for the first time. Way cool can wait till I can drive my car down to the show. Some crazy stupid builds and some very expensive cars. darn I am glad Atlanta has that many car fans.

how about a little how to fix your screw ups.
Some of these panels need to fit a lot of edges very tight so they can be riveted.
I have been known to miss a edge, so how do you fix it

If you will clamp it up like shown and take your propane torch and warm it up to about 400 deg them you can hammer it down to the new position

Wolf--what a marvelous undertaking.  Your journey is underway...enjoy every moment along the way and the challenges you will meet and solve. Progress has to be measured in small increments...like the old joke about eating an elephant...you know 1 bite at a time.   :D

I have to ask, is all that fab work actually going to fit within the body structure of 2nd Generation Firebird.  I'm assuming you have taken critical measurements, as well as working off a drawing or two, correct?

My hats off to you for resurrecting this very interesting project.

Well 1 step forward and 2 backwards. I was hoping to get the pedal assembly in the car this weekend ,DENIED.. Where the brake pedal needs to "be"  crashes into the steering shaft. custom pedal needed. Then one of the master cylinders hits the valve cover in that position. and will need to be shifted over and the flange bearing for the steering shaft needs a mount on the front bulkhead.  I have spent the day snarling at it. The next pictures will be graphic. What I have come to terms with is pull the engine, while out modify the oil pan for all the correct pick up and scavenge lines. pull all the side pods and sheet metal on the inside firewall so I can totally finish the front bulkhead. On the drivers side-- steering shaft outer fire wall bearing. Master cylinder bulk head and mount the pedal assembly to the roll cage. passenger side drill and install dry sump oil lines and fuel  lines and weld the into the front bulk head to exit on the fire wall. In the center of the fire wall finish the sheetmetal inside and outside. then reinstall ...

After a 2 years of searching I finally have a transmission. Just got back from PRI where I located a 6 speed sequential gearbox. RTS makes this transmission which will handle 1400 ft-lbs of torque. Now I can finish this build. It's amazing how much money you can spend filling in the missing blanks in a couple of days.

RUT-ROW
WHOOPS does not fit into the chassis. Going to need to cut the frame rail and reform. probably going to need to to modify the framerail for the starter anyway.
The frame was never designed for a blowproof housing anyway.

Finished the fuel tank Saturday. When I wen to install it and grab the dry sump tank it would not come out of the trunk with out moving the gas tank --BAD ---
That set me off fitting the body all day today. So with the body mostly cut to it's location. I can see with just a little trimming I will be able to get the oil tank out.

I can't believe your cuts and fab meet up so perfectly. When I was doing bonehead sheetmetal repair for my Camaro and Truck, the hardest part was the fact that I had no idea how to measure over contours to get accurate cuts. This led to very poor fitment, but I don't know what to do.

You do great work, very cool to see it in action.

Had to do a bonsai run to Charlotte Friday to pick up a pump for the lasers chiller. While up there I stopped by the Transmission guys and checked on my transmission. All parts look to be done and all the need to do is assemble it. should have it 2 week in April,  Cool shop and they do some real nice machine work. Those guys are big time in the drift world. Kinda odd to me but COOL. Left there and went to Competition Transmission and Gear the home of 9 inch ford rear ends. He made my 9 inch for my car he has about 400 of them he rents to teams all over the country.

well I was fairly annoyed with my progress on the shifter this weekend. It seemed that I took one step forward and two backward. so I took the day off and finished the shifter. A lot more trouble than it should have been but what you going to do.

I did find some cool carbon fiber I had been saving for just this kind of thing.
I will inlay the shifter on each side with some panels when I get the console finished.

Here it is in the car
(http://www.amk-mfg.com/1732wolf/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/IMG_2862.jpg)
and with the fuel tank
(http://www.amk-mfg.com/1732wolf/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/IMG_2863.jpg)
Got to build the mounts for both. the battery boxes and mount the fire suppression system.
I forgot to mention I still need to figure out how to fill both of these tanks. I have nice tanks but don't have a plan yet on how to fill them. Whoops ?

I am trying to decide if I want to make the roof and quarter panels removable. it does make it easier to work on if you do a major service or update.

So complex...so very cool

Removable panels are handy for sure. If it will look good then I say do it...last thing you want is for it to like an afterthought though, but judging by how the rest of it looks, it will look sweet anyway you decide!!!

There can’t be very many things that would ever require you to remove the roof and quarters, I would not bother unless it was really fast and easy to get it done.

When I look at that trans and shifter I feel like I'm actually looking at the arm of the terminator.

Great work! What CAD program are you using? Did you cut those parts out with a CNC plasma or just trace it onto the sheet and cut it out with ???

This is the exciting part where it starts to look like a car! Keep the updates coming.

I use our flaming dragon to cut out car parts. she likes car parts.
As for a cad program I use Solidworks it is the best bar none.

Wolf, absolutely amazing! I've watched the guys on TV using English wheels, etc and told my wife I'd love to learn fabrication but you're in whole different stratosphere! Thanks for sharing.

It's been a few days. I have been burning the midnight oil on this project. here is a little up date.
I am trying to get my body panel skills back up to par and I have started with the rear lower quarter panel.

After the outside panel I started with the battery box
I like the battery location one on each side of the trunk.
The only down side is you will need to remove the rear tire to swap a battery.
