Title: Making my own 1969 Trans Am
Post by: indyta1989 on July 04, 2011, 11:27:57 PM
Some of you may recall that I purchased Bryan's 1969 Firebird 12+ months ago for a special project.

I have looked to purchase a 1969 Trans Am for as long as I can remember.  However, the price of the real 1969 Trans Am's continue to move out of sensible reach.  Bryan's 1969 Firebird would make for an excellent starting point to make my own.

Across March-April 2010 I disassembled the firebird completely, got it to the media blaster and dropped the shell off for paint and body work in May 2010.

Fast Forward 12 months, the firebird shell is now painted.  I got the Firebird home May 2011 from the body shop.  The 12 month duration was not a surprise as I utilized a local friend who has painted a number of firebirds for me in the past.  He does the body work and paint part-time since he has a full-time day job.

Across the past 12 months I had the engine and transmission rebuilt. Now that the firebird is back in my garage I have the engine and transmission dropped in, converted the front drum brakes using an inline tube disc brake kit, got the wheels and tires mounted and various trim installed.

I purchased the new metal reproduction Trans Am hood and I am very pleased with the overall fit and quality.

Next up: finish the engine compartment assembly and then work on the interior. I am targeting to use the Holley Avenger EFI carb, MSD distributor and RARE exhaust manifolds and pipes. I am likely going to install an aftermarket AC system (vintage AIR) once everything else is completed and debugged.

Click here for a quick slideshow showing the progress over the past 12 months.

Absolutely gorgeous!! Gary is definately one of those guys that does not mess around when it comes to getting a bird restored and the knowledge the he possesses about these cars(and willingness to share information) is second to none as far as I am concerned. He has pontiac memorabilia that a true enthusiast dreams about at night. I am very thankful for having met him through ebay in '05.

I love it! I really dig the dog dishes too. Drive the crap out of that - Enjoy it as much as possible, like one should with a T/A, free from the worry of non-replicability. Do a donut for me buddy! (Not implying that you should risk harming such an awesome car - just enjoy it)

Gary,

That is one slick project!

Like others, I really like the wheel/tire combo.  Really offsets the clean paint scheme.

The car sounds very nice!  Looking forward to another vid of you behind the wheel.

I also like the progress of your garage. From floor jacks to 4 post lift. Waiting impatiently for interior pics. Also, nice job on the slide show. think you'll have it on the road for the spring?

I plan to have this firebird on the road in the spring.  I am also in the process of moving from central Illinois to southwest Florida,  so this will be a great car to put on the road there!

I decided to stick with the original numbers matching 350 engine. I had it completely rebuilt mostly to stock specifications and bored .030.  I then upgraded to a 1969 Ram Air III 4bbl intake manifold and carb. I then added the 1969 ram air exhaust manifolds and pipes from R.A.R.E. (Ram Air Restoration Ent).   Interesting fact about this 350 engined firebird is that it came from the factory with a TH400 automatic transmission instead of what I would expect to be the TH350.  I had the transmission completely rebuilt as well.   So far I have had one test drive and all is running great.
