Yep, Yakima's not too far from the border. I'm in Grants Pass (55 mi. from the I-5 Cali border, about 60-70 from the coast)
So about 4 hours south of Portland. :) Maybe we should combine Pac NW with CA, And just have the 'Pacific Charter'

Are you racin the red car next season? I wouldn't mind seeing a bunch down in Walla Walla either. Wouldn't mind takin the wifes car for a run or two this next season.
-
I would love to be there. Right now, i have to pull an engine, prep and install new one, replace a ball joint, well that should be enough time to geter done.
-
I have a lot of work to do if I want to be ready to run the Formula this year, but I did get my motor mounts made and welded in finally. So it is just a matter of putter her all back together. But she isn't runable with 456's and street tires either so a lot of it comes down to money....
-
WOW! You've got all the toys I want.

Hillsboro,OR here

Beaverton, Aloha. Welcome brother. We just might have to hook up soon. I have a 78 400 Solar Gold TA. Have had many 79's and others in the past. It's exciting to hear you are close by. I also have a secret parts connection that you may know of or not. Excellent connection, perhaps one of the best in the country, from a local perspective. Chris

Yeah, I saw it on Craigs sometime ago. I dumped my 78 to a good buyer to keep the poor thing outta the rain.

I'm originally from SoCal, but have met at least three 2nd gen Firebird owners here in Salem, OR. (I don't count because none of my Birds are here-lol). But I just picked up a nice dash, side panels, and 70-73 lower valence for my 76 TA and 75 Formula 400 (getting the 70-73 nose swap). I'm planning to bring my 76 TA up and sell it here- no smog, so I'll build it right.

Geno,
I'm in PDX along with a few other members. Wish we could dispense with the smog, but at least we pay more to live here, so we have that going for us, which is nice ???? I'm sure your bird will enjoy stretching its wings when it comes up. Cheers,
Chris

Hi Guys,
Here's my 76 TA I found out in Hermiston, OR back in 2009. I swapped out the nose, bumper and hood for 77 parts.

I found a nice W72 runner down in CA- so my 76 TA will be getting a really nice 400. I had a 76 400, but it had a cracked cylinder and was a weak 500557 block. Pardon the slimy orange Chevy paint-lol. It will be the proper color when it goes into the car.

I'm hoping I'll have her running this summer, in time for my June trip up to Salem, OR.

Have the same motor to start swapping into my '79 403 this summer. Are you planning on keeping the same intake manifold? Will be watching to see how it goes for you.

Hi Chris,
Looks like the Performer on that 400 has a provision for EGR- I have to build the engine to pass CA smog, so I'll be putting EGR, a cat, and stock manifolds on the car too. I don't want to choke the engine, so my plan is to install a y-pipe off the cat and run dual muffs and tailpipes to splitters. If the smog station fails me, I have a stock 76 intake and a stock transverse muffler to sit behind the axle. I'll be swapping the carb to a fresh Q-jet as well.

Great. Thanks. Are you planning to use an aftermarket CAT such as a Magnaflow? I'm in the same boat regarding smog, so will be using RARE exhaust manifolds and CAT / Y-pipe. I also have the Performer RPM intake and a drop base shaker assembly, so not sure how that it going to turn out yet.
Have another question for you since you have built a number of cars before. I haven't done an engine swap or restoration before, so this will be new territory for me. I can clearly see how one thing leads to another, and I'm not sure I want to have my car reduced to a garage full of strewn parts just yet. Have only put about 20 miles on the car since I bought it 1.5 years ago :( I was kind of hoping to be able to get the motor / EFI / exhaust installed, and then perhaps sometime in the future I could more work on the other parts of the car. Generally, it is in good shape and is garaged, so no worries about the elements deteriorating things further.
Does this sound like a reasonable approach, or would you recommend doing other work while I have the motor out? It is pretty much a factory original car with all the original rubber parts to boot.
Sorry if I am hijacking the thread away from its intended purpose.
Cheers
-
Chris,
I'm not sure what emissions control requirements Portland has vs. CA, but I'm sure a cat is part of the required equipment. EGR and stock exhaust manifolds are also required- RARE manifolds do flow better than the log-style manifolds, but should pass visual inspection.
A Pontiac 400 has it's fuel pump on the driver side, so clearly you need to reroute your fuel line. Chassis and engine mounts for a Pontiac V -8 need to be sourced as well. I would focus on getting everything Installed first, running and smogged with a carb before upgrading to EFI.
The only thing worth doing with the engine out on a clean car is detailing the engine bay. I would also consider replacing any body and suspension bushings, rebuilding the front brakes. A fresh engine looks out of place in a dirty engine bay. I'm planning to open up my 400 when I get it home, check the bearings, and install new front and rear seals. Supposedly this 400 is a decent runner, and with a new carb, plugs and wires it should run well, provided it has good compression and decent heads. I also have the correct 6x-4 heads, if the existing 6x-8s need servicing.

Thanks!

I'm in Portland, don't have a TA yet, but have had 3 in the past: 78, and two 79's. I'm in the early stages of finding a 4 speed 79 project, non a/c, non t-top preferred. Hope to meet some enthusiasts soon. Peace.

I met guy through Facebook who has a 74 Firebird w/ a 72 nose- lives and works in Salem. We're planning to move out of CA with the next two years- hopefully back to Salem, OR. as well.

Central Oregon checking in, not sure if there are any T/A guys anywhere near me. My son and are restarting a 78' T/A project I bought several years ago.
