Title: California Checking in
Post by: 79TARon on January 23, 2007, 01:15:14 PM
So where is everyone? I live in Rancho Cucamonga and have been on TAC for 3 or 4 years. I am almost done with my 1979 Trans Am restoration that I have been working on for 4 years. The car has been family owned since 1980.

LOL. Almost as fun as Winnemucca.
When I was a kid, back in the early 70's, I watched a Bugs Bunny cartoon and one of the lines was something like "Next stop... Rancho Cucamonga". At that time, I didnt know that Rancho Cucamonga was only 20 miles from where I lived.

Drive thru there all the time, between Kingman, AZ. and Rancho Palos Verdes, Ca.
This last time we hauled some T-34 Mentor wings.
Going a different way home though, flying to Big Bear, and driving a Le Baron home.
Ken from H.O. Racing lives there.

I've never been to Rancho Cucamunga. But my Aunt and Uncle live in Whittier. And I have another aunt that lives in North Hollywood. Man, I need to get down there and visit with them. It's been so long

Did you guys ever see the "Friday" movies? Ice Cube is the main character. Anyways, I think it's in the second one that Ice Cube goes to Rancho Cucamunga to live with relatives.

Ben, I love San Diego, way better than the L.A. area. How the hell can you afford to live there?!

I used to live in West Covina but now relocated to the high desert close to Apple Valley. We have to pass Rancho every time we go down the hill.

Have a good job.  No way around it.  It's actually cheaper to live in SD than it is in most of L.A. when you factor in wear, tear on the car and time lost in traffic ;-)

Man,
I miss all the shows since I move out here to Arizona.
Which chapter, SoCal, or San Deigo?
There is a local show, I think at Fuddruckers in Lake Forrest.
If you hear about it, please post it up here.
I may go.

It was the SoCal chapter. I heard about it about a month before the event, then forgot about it, then drove past it by coincidence. I rushed home to pickup the camera but it was too late, only a few cars left when I got back.

Fuddruckers, yep. I've been there a few times. You get a good mix of cars there. It is every Tuesday.

I haven't been there since the time change, but I need to go back and check it out.

There is another, huge weekly meet here in Irvine, which is now hosted by Ford. It used to be called the Crystal Cove meet, now called Cars & Coffee. It is hosted at the Ford design center. Basically it got to big for the original spot (and the snooty locals didn't like the idea of million dollar Ferrari's gathering every week  ) so they moved.

This is a great meet, tons of cars of all types. Everything from high $$ vintage Ferrari's to rare muscle to old British machines.

There are quite a few other weekly meets also, Donut Derelicts, Frisco's... Yes, SoCal rocks for the meets.

If you get homesick and want to see some pics, check out this link:

Thanks. Great to be here.

The City of Corona is located southeast of Los Angeles nearby Riverside. The city was famous back in 1900s for it's international automobile race on circular Grand Blvd.

I own a white '79 403 WS6 T-Top Trans Am in the process of restoring with modifications to improve the performance overall.

Hi Harry!
I use to hang out there in Van Nuys all the time, back then when your car was new.
I started cruising Van Nuys Blvd back in 1977 or so, and going to all the GM Firebird/Camaro Plant Tours.
I would always stop off at that dealership, and look at all the new Macho T/As they seemed to always have on the lot.
I stopped going near the end of '92, as both the GM plant was closed, and so was cruising.
Great to see you kept everything in the same area. ;)

I'm never gonna put 6000 miles on my car driving to Georgia and back on the real Bandit Run, and the Bandit Run is propably never gonna come to the SouthWest. So, it's up to us to form our own Bandit Run. New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, California, etc. Route 66. The Ending point of Route 66 is Santa Monica. Someone come up with a starting point. If we can get enough people interested, we should make it happen. We would or should get a sponsor for it.
Everyone chime in with your thoughts on this.

They use to have a show Called Trans-A-Rama in Northern California back in the days.
They use to get 100 Trans Ams or more.
In the 90s, they were down in the 50s I believe.
With time, and advertizing, I'm sure it could be done.
To me, the big problem is the size of all the states.
California is so long, that to drive south, then east to start, would be quite a trip as well.
When I loved in SoCal, I use to drive up to the show every year in Northern California.
But the furthest east was to go to shows in Prescott, Arizona.
If something like this was to happen, I would let everyone stop by my place for a tour. ;)

back in the 80ees and 90ees the gas prices were as you know in buck area , now triple that for fuel is main concern for people not to drive long distances ,also... second  i would say , most cars don't have OD overdrive transmissions as fuel milage is not good for long distance drives makes people to think twice for relialbilty in a trip and  overall cost of fuel

I would SO be in for a West Coast Bandit 66 Run! 79 T/A here.

Welcome. I've been to Walnut Creek for a super sundae (saw the shop on TV). We visit my son who lives in "The Cannery", just over the Bay Bridge.  Too bad he's not a car guy and my T/A will go to someone else. Have you been to the aircraft carrier in Alameda?

Walnut Creek is the next town north of Alamo. I haven't made the trip to the museum.

I have never seen your particular color decal package on a nocturne blue TA. Mine is nocturne but with the camel hobnail interior and the gold decal package of course. It replicates the brand new one I drove back in the day. My original TA was purchased from Meacham Pontiac in Scottsdale, home of the original Macho TA. I wonder how many members own a Macho.

When I have the time, I will go through the whole Photobucket tutorial and post a good pic that I have. I just recently purchased it, waited two months to get it into the shop of the only mechanic with the knowledge to work on the car and that I trust. He is even gonna smog it for me which is not the easiest feat to accomplish in this over-regulated state with a Pontiac 400.

Nobody would touch my car for under $10-15k and it didn't need rust repair.  The few shops that were interested all couldn't get around to it for another 12-18 months.

Victory Machine in San Jose has a paint shop and was more than willing to do the work, but their waiting list was quite lengthy.

I ended up shipping the car to Texas to get it painted by a competent body shop for 1/3 the price...

Man, I was thinking 10k including the decals, tops. I have no rust or body work issues either. Did you have the door jams and under the hood and trunk resprayed? Are you familiar with Texas Trans Am Service and Restoration in Ft. Worth?

JJR is one of the mods here and the primary at the 301Garage.  He knows the guys at Texas Trans Ams quite well from my understanding.  I'd put my faith in him.
You might want to give him a shout.
And from what I've seen of the pics from Texas TA, they seem to do really nice work.

Stripped down to bare metal on the trunk, doors, and jams and hood.  It was a color change too.  Good work can be found that doesn't have to cost a ridiculous amount.

 Well...

I am not actually a mod here.

I actually branched off and did my own 301 site. Had I not done that, I might have made the
cut. <grin>

Actually, I am fairly well known among the staff here.

Yes, I know David and respect his work and business, but will not tell fluff stories.

The resto business is a very tuff one, with a gigantic number of misunderstandings on both
ends of the shop/customer relationship.

I serve as 301/301T consultant to David and am part time assistant web master for him.

I am not paid, or an employee - but would love to be. I've asked if I can when I retire...

If you have any questions either public or private, I'd be happy to share what I know.

I saw the same challenges as Ben on the paint and body front.  Everyone wanted at least 10k if they were willing to work on it at all.  Seems like every CA body shop just wants insurance work.

I did manage to find Guerrero's Classic Auto Body in San Jose.  He quoted me $6500 for the work.  This is the best I could find.  He has done several TAs.  My TA is currently in his shop.  I'll let you know how it goes...

In terms of good shops to take your TA to for mechanical issues in the Bay Area...Victory Machine in San Jose seems to be the most knowledgable about our cars.  Particularly in terms of engines.  Their prices aren't cheap but they do seem to actually estimate their work pretty well.  There were 5 TAs in Vic's shop when I was there...so I took that as a good sign:-)

They are very busy so their turnaround time isn't super fast...but once they start your car they take it thru to completion quickly.
Title: Re: California Checking in

I would be very interested in the outcome stros. Are you having the door jams, underside of hood and rear deck lid underside painted? Are you expecting more of a nice driver paint look or a little closer to concourse quality? Did he tell you he needed about two months?

If you have the opportunity, could you ask him if he has ever painted a T/A Nocturne Blue? A very tricky color to duplicate and only offered in '79.

Thanks for any info man.
Title: Re: California Checking in
Post by: stros on April 30, 2014, 01:06:33 PM
I'll PM you George's contact info.  He's a nice guy.  Your TA looks in a lot better shape than mine...so I would think it wouldn't take him 2 months.  He did want 2 months initially for mine though.

I would say I'm looking for something between driver and concourse quality...leaning closer to the latter.  He's supposed to fully repaint everything including around the engine bay.  My hood had to be totally replaced so he's got to paint that one from scratch.  The rust on it pitted it too deeply to be salvageable.

Title: Re: California Checking in
Post by: DrRoberts99 on May 01, 2014, 02:25:32 PM
Spoke with David at TTA today for about half an hour. Great guy and knows just about all there is to know about our cars. Nobody in the Bay Area knows much about TA's that I have found let alone ever paining a car nocturne blue. I rather spend the dough and know I'm gonna get my car back painted with  #29 factory color and the decals applied properly. I'm done messin' around with painters that don't know jack about TA's. Plus David can tell me all I need to know about my car by looking at it. The security factor along with his knowledge and experience makes the transaction a positive one for me as well as a no-brainer.

All I gotta do now is sell the deal to my wife. That's the hardest part!

Thanks to everybody that provided suggestions but I gotta bite the bullet and do it right.

"Did you find a place in the area to paint your car?"

First off, it seemingly took forever to register my T/A in CA because the selling party had no title since the state he lived in did not title '79's. CA DMV is extremely difficult to work with. I gotta tell you, there were days I was really stressed because I could not get the document I needed. I've got a CA title now though.

I was intending to truck my car to Texas Trans Am until just yesterday when I was cleaning up my Trans Am file. I tripped across a website that I had bookmarked called "ET Muscle Cars". They are located near Sacramento. I spoke with the owner yesterday and he impressed me very much. If you have the interest, checkout the website. Ernie, the owner, is my kind of guy. He is gonna ballpark me an estimate working from a batch of pics I sent him plus other info I told him about my car. I know he will come in higher but it is comforting to know that I can drive out and check on my car as it goes through the respray process.

Appreciate your interest.

The last time I picked up my car from my mechanic he informed me that the Back Pressure Transducer was shot. Try to find one of those must have smog parts if you have a 400. I decided while my car was in the shop, I might has well have the Flapper Shaker Hood Scoop Conversion Kit installed. Better to do it now as opposed to after paint.

My mechanic recommended Steve Silva Body Shop & Restorations in Fremont (510-790-1600) He is the first guy I have spoken with that discussed charging for the job in stages since it is impossible for a painter to know all of your T/A's dirty secrets before stripping the car down to the metal. Doubtful if he will rent you a booth but you never knows tills you ask.

We pay a huge price penalty for living here because the cost of living is so fricking high!

Not sure how close all of you are but for my decals I had YAK Graphics in downtown San Jose apply mine.  Cost $100, which I believe is reasonable.

The owner Jason is a super nice guy and manages a super clean shop.  He had a $200k boat that he was working on before my TA.  He's done a bunch of TAs and has a passion for TAs too as his mom owned a 78TA when he was a little kid.

Stros,

Where did you get your paint job? The car looks nice!

Long long story on that one.  The shop is Classic (formerly Guerrero's) Auto Body in San Jose on San Carlos St. very close to downtown.
I was promised to have my car back in 2 months, 12 months later it's still not done yet.  The work done so far has been done well, and they honor their estimates, but they constantly put you behind insurance work (I've heard that many other shops do this as well).  I've also had a few parts disappear while the car has been there.  If you do consider them, I would make sure to get all due dates in writing - and if you do have to take the car off the lot after leaving it there - make sure to get a revised due date.  I didn't do that - and I regret that.

Supposedly I'm going to get the car back home this week - we shall see.  I think it has about 4 hours of labor left in it at this point.

Hello

Checking in from Folsom Ca. I`ve had my Trans Am just two weeks. Having a lot of fun working on it and fixing a few things. Car has been in my family since about `82.

Isnt Placerville in the high desert west side of LA ? My folks spent a couple of winters in riverside co. and I'm sure we went thru your town on one of our trips, maybe on the way to a ghost town.

I'm thinking you are thinking Palmdale.

Placerville is up in northern Ca and is quite beautiful.

Palmdale is a high dessert hell hole

LOL, I don't think I've ever been to Palmdale and now I don't have any desire to visit.

Thank you Brashanic, Placerville is a small, very friendly town in Northern California. The Gold that started the California gold rush was discovered about 15 minutes from my house. And surprisingly for a small town we have a very active car community.

I stand corrected. Thanks, I knew I heard the name somewhere. The town I am thinking is where the Roy Rogers museum was located.  I had an aunt and uncle that lived in the bay area (walnut creek), I have been to Cali a few times and always enjoyed it.

That's in Victorville right off the 15frw on the way to vegas.

It's all the same hell hole.

I wasn't correcting you I hate doing that.

I just didn't want anyone to confuse placerville with hell.

Bingo, I knew I would recognize the name. That's funny, that's the same thing my wife said. LOL. It seems to me it was in the middle of nowhere. Our kids were small at the time and we took them out there to a ghost town.  Another fun experience was our stop in Bakersfield. We started early in the day in San Diego, drove to LA, went to a taping of the price is right, which pretty much lasted all day, then left and headed north to the bay area. I literally fell asleep behind the wheel, which I never understood how people could do that. We pulled over at the first place we came to, which was Bakersfield. It was midnight, we had no idea where we were. It was a dumpy truckstop, dirty sparce rooms, wool army blankets, with someone knocking on the door in the wee hours. (hookers I guess). When daylight arrived we saw we were in the middle of nothing with tumbleweeds blowing around. Glad we stopped though, it seemed like forever before we saw another place once we were back on the road.

The Roy Rodgers museum is gone.
Victorville has grown quit a bit in the last 10 years.

The ghost town is Cajalco ghost town and is still there.

We go out there in our jeeps quite a bit.

I've been through Bakersfield a lot. In respect for any TAC members that live in Bakersfield I will refrain from saying anything about Bakersfield.

For those members that live in Northern California there is a Trans Am club out of Sacramento called the "Trans Am Club of America, Golden State Chapter."  It is a small but active club.  I have joined the club but have not been able to participate in any activity yet.
http://www.transamclub.com/

Also the "Cars & Coffee of Folsom" is very active as well.

If I can get my "hot start" issued sorted out by 01/01, and if the weather isn't horrible, I am going to the Cars & Coffee Folsom Polar Bear Drive on 01/01.

We should try to arrange some type of get together next summer!

Hello Jeff!  Welcome to TAC!

I dont log on much here anymore, since TAC last crashed and the format changed.  Its much more difficult to navigate now than it used to be.

I'm still around.  I used to be near the Placerville area, but recently moved closer to SMF.

I suppose that I should change my screen name.  I sold all of my TAs except for my Solar Gold 79.

Seems most get togethers are way North or South of me.  I'm located between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo.  I'd be game to help make something happen here...show, cruise, or just meet up and bar-b-q, if anybody is down for it.

Most of us second gen Firebird and TA owners are down in the LA area- but we like to meet up different nights in the San Fernando valley. We've cruised out to Ventura in the past as well. We also have a Facebook page- SoCal Firebirds and TAs. It's my page, but I do allow 1st, 3rd and 4th gen TAs to post there as well.
