Hoping someone has a tip or trick to removing the speedometer housing. I have 2" style housing. It is original and it does not want to come out. I've gone crazy with the vice grips and even tried using a punch to loosen it around the edges.
Scared to use a flame around the hydraulic oil.

Took a second run at it after a good night of sleep. I applied heat to no avail. Broke one of tabs trying to rotate it with the plyers but since I'm probably going to replace the housing it doesn't matter.
I think I'm at that point where taking the tail piece out is my best bet to work at it.

The tail housing and the Speedo gear housing have probably fused together. I would remove the tail housing and soak the area around the Speedo housing with penetrating oil overnight. Then you can put the tail housing in a vice with rages to insulate it and try to pound out the Speedo housing from the inside, use a brass drift if you have one.

I'm at a loss. I would be using penetrating oil on it. Any thing inboard of the o-ring should be well lubricated.

In reality it should only be the O-ring that makes contact with the tail housing. But the speedometer drive housing and tail housing are both aluminum, so over time with enough moisture the two could become fused together on the outside of the transmission, not internally.

Got it out last night. I didn't end up taking the tail housing out. Used a sharp punch to force rotate it until I saw movement. The thing was welded tight from oxidation. I don't think that thing has come out since 1980. I'll probably end up replacing the speedo gear housing but for now I'll just replace the seals.
